Our different species of buck

Post by Mud Dog »

From another thread / topic.
I was just thinking, it might be a good idea to start a thread with pics of our different types of game for easier recognition and to educate us all. I'm an avid hunter and don't even know them all since many are not indigenous to my neck of the woods.
Just calling them buck instead of getting too technical and grouping them as antelope, gazelles etc.

Let's keep it topical for easier reference.

Just post a clear, close pic of each contribution with a brief description if you like, and general habitat.

I'll start it off. (You can edit / add if you like.)

Dawie, I edited your post because your comment was lost in the "quote". ;-)

Interesting, that ...... I've always known them as Thompson's ... just had a quick gander and see that they are indeed classified as different species even though they are almost identical, even their social behaviours are the same. Given that there are so many variations in the Springbuck's horn shapes and thickness as well as the general weights (something I've always just put down to genes and habitat), the only difference that I can make out is that the white on the rump of the Springbuck extends higher than the tail.

What other differences are there?

Springbok = Antidorcas marsupialis

Thomson's Gazelle = Eudorcas thomsonii

Thommies cannot pronk like a Springbok, and they do not posses a "pron"k. The horns are also totally different.

Thommies and Springbok are both of Subfamily Antilopinae.

But the Genus are completely different.
Springbok - Antidorcas
Thomson's - Eudorcas thomsonii

Springbok is heavier and taller than a Thomsons.

PS: Bontebok was originally confined to the Western Cape Fynbos region, and was virtually extinct.
