Close encounters with wild animals

Post by Niel »

Saw this on facebook and it reminded me about the few times we were chased by ellies in Kruger, Mana Pools and Wankie

Tell us about your encounters

The story to explain the pic:
"Quite a while back, these guys were working with hippos in Kruger.
The hippo in the photos had been darted - you can still see the dart in the picture. While working on the hippo one of the guys suddenly noticed bubb
les coming from the hippo and the next thing the hippo attacked.
The guy in the light shirt pulling the other guy through the water probably saved his life!
AFRICA IS NOT FOR SISSIES !"

So true Neil, Erika my girlfriend and also a vet and working from Modimolle, the other weekend we went to dart a pack of wild lions for vaccinations, tick cleansing, microtagging etc....now you work on a rough guide as to what you think the lion weighs which dictates the dosage of M99 or M38 etc etc...so we dart the males first then the females and then the cubs we ran around like lunatics to catch by hand, but they took along time to go down as they fight the drug, and when they are down you still have this feeling that what if they were to now wake up....they were huge and it was a very scary thought...I have some pics which I will upload to this thread....

Unfortunately I did not have my camera with me but this morning on road to my office I was blocked by 2 hippos.
First one crossed the road and the second was coming down the road, but fortunately he kept left and I kept left and we passed, but he did stopped basically next to the bakkie and gave me a look. it was a surreal moment.

Just to explain my office. AT 05:30 I have to leave the ST Lucia caravan park to be at the beach to catch the days food while the sun rise

George ..... you lucky man !!

St Lucia is the only place where I have seen animals STANDING in the road, not phased at all by vehicles.
