F_D,

i just came back from the vet, phoned his emergency number, and he said i did the right thing,

it must have happened early in the afternoon, i did not notice it, the other dog was barking the whole afternoon, which made me go out, where i found the snake at the pool.

first of all, my son took the dog into the swimpool and flushed his eyes, after the snake was killed.

then we flushed his eyes with milk , and reflushed in the bathroom with the hand held shower.

the vet said he should be fine, will take him in to the vet in the morning, he said some ointment will do the trick, but said i have nothing to worry...

Bennie, I like snakes as much (little!) as you do, but we need them to keep vermin such as rats under control. I hate rats more than I hate snakes. Snakes will generally leave you alone unless provoked (I am living proof to this... <shudder>).

'n geele!

its a cape cobra, the diamond brown markings on the snake is a give away for it. the younger cape cobra doesnt have the markings as the older ones and has a brown coloured tail tip.....highly venomous and bloody fast.

Unfortunately snakes are like 4X4 drivers, it just needs one or two bad ones to condemn the rest. Some years ago I shot a large snake in my garden because of the kids, only to find out it was a mole snake. Six months later my front lawn was ruined with dozens of mole holes, and these were big buggers, about the size of a rabbit.
My neighbour has a large Burmese Python, which he lets run around in his garden from time to time. The locals run a mile when they see it, and he hasn't had an attempted burglary since

Dis beslis 'n Kaapse Kobra (Naja nivea). Ek was die naweek by Swartriet en het, behalwe vir al die dooie molslange, ook drie dooie Kaapse Kobras gesien langs die pad. Hy is na die Swart mamba die gisftigste slang in SA. 38 ste in die wêreld!

Ek is Saterdag met my gesin Trekoskraal toe sal more foto's plaas.

No, no photo, too close to the parts. It mostly recovered but there is still some marks left, but only visible when I wear a Speedo, which I never do  I felt the bite initially and killed the little bugger in my pants but did not worry too much until about two days after when the thing started to fall holes in. The main thing was to stop any infection from then on. Not a nice experience. I was bitten in Roodepoort, I've heard that the violin spider is a inhabitant op the Highveld?

I was 6 days in hospital and 2 months at home. The leg only started to recover well when I started swimming again. That helped the bloodflow and the swelling subsided. It looks like a burn wound now and all the feeling is gone.

At first they thought it was tickbite fever, but then Dr. Wouter Basson recognised me in the hospital ward (I met him when he treated my mom after a heart attack) and I begged him to have a look. He then diagnosed it as a Violin Spider bite.

All the whille I had a heart rate of 155  (realy scary) and a fever of 39/40 The CRP (infection level) count was 359 (should be below10). Full blood count was 22 (should be below 7).

All in all a very bad and painful experience by this little bugger:

The small head and neck area in relationship to the body indicates the molesnake genus, but what particular species I do not know. Very dark in colour, hey.

Hierdie is 'n brawe dude.

Pretoria - The guardian angels of a Pretoria man "were working overtime" as he and his wife drove 170km with a dangerous Mozambique spitting cobra in their car.

Gordon Parratt, 69, remained calm while the undesirable 85cm-long passenger wound itself around his leg on several occasions.

He and his 65-year-old wife, Ilda, of Moreleta Park east of Pretoria, left the Biyamiti rest camp in the Kruger National Park on Friday.

After several kilometres Gordon felt something like an insect brush against his leg and foot and wiped it away.

As he was doing so again, he looked down and saw a snake next to his left foot. It looked like a Mozambique spitting cobra.

Although he was rattled, he remained calm and told his wife they had a "passenger".

"Fortunately I'm not the panicky type. My wife immediately put her feet up on the dashboard."

Thought car would be stolen

In Hazyview they stopped at a taxi rank but "I didn't want to get out there and leave my car because I was scared it would be stolen".

The couple then drove to the reptile park in Hazyview. They removed "everything that could move" from the car, but couldn't find the snake.

Ilda said the staff wanted them to leave the car and arrange other transport home, but her husband wouldn't have it.

An official at the reptile park gave them two rolls of stretch plaster.

If the snake should strike, they could use it to make a tourniquet to prevent the poison from spreading.

"I also asked them to alert all the medical centres along the way so that I could stop there, if need be," Gordon said.

Later on he once again noticed the snake near his foot. At that point he couldn't stop because they were in a pass.

Snake winds up leg in heavy traffic

"At Sabie we stopped, but couldn't find the snake.

"About 15km from Lydenburg the snake wound itself around my left leg and ankle. Its head came up to my knee.

"The traffic was heavy and it was raining hard, but I kept calm," he said.

Just before Lydenburg the couple stopped and enquired about a snake expert. Hein Geldenhuys, 49, was called.

After dropping his wife off at a guesthouse, Gordon drove to Geldenhuys's house.

Geldenhuys caught the cobra. "All you could see was venom flying," Gordon said.

Geldenhuys said a snake in a car is a nightmare. "Fortunately I managed to catch the snake without injuring it."

He was surprised to see "how calm the oom was".

He said these snakes are very dangerous because their venom attacks the nervous system and the body's soft tissues.

"The oom was very lucky. The Lord protected him and his guardian angels were definitely working overtime."

Besides the really big constrictors, snakes do not see us as prey. They do not attack on a whim, their natural instinct is to preserve their venom for when it's needed. If they feel threatened, there is a need to defend themselves, so if one does'nt hurt the snake (accidentally get it underfoot perhaps), and if one remains calm, the snake feels no threat. Nervous energies can be detected by the snake which would in turn become anxious and on the alert.
There is one "exception" to the above that I know of and that's the Black Mambas which have been known to go into attack mode from a distance. It's now believed that they see you as an intruder to their territory which they in turn try to protect.
So, stay calm at all times and avoid wherever possible.
When your road comes to an end ...... you need a HILUX!.
