West Coast National Park

Post by Niel »

We drove thru the park on Friday on my way to Langebaan and I saw abougt 46 "rooipens" tortoises (pic attached) on the road in the park. On Sunday we spotted 35 more……. I have never seen as many tortoises as this past weekend.

I also came across this mr and he was full of tricks as he found his shady resting place on the rear suspension of my brothers Nissan - the pics will tell the rest.

Last but not least some nice pics of the area

Puffy's are really beautiful, appear to be lethargic, but they're not .... just very bold and not too perturbed, can take a lot of provocation before it strikes back .... actually quite 'punny' since it likes to strike backwards and striking at 115km/h it's on record as the fastest striking snake. Still one of the nicest looking snakes indigenous to SA.

Mark, somebody has been lying to you.  Puffies are extremely venomous and are responsible for more deaths in Africa than any other snake... Look at what Wikipedia says on the matter:
This species is responsible for more fatalities than any other African snake. This is due to a combination of factors, including its wide distribution, common occurrence, large size, potent venom that is produced in large amounts, long fangs that inject it deeply, their reliance on camouflage which makes these snakes reluctant to flee, their habit of basking by footpaths and sitting quietly when approached, and their willingness to bite

As mentioned, puff adders have toxic venom. In humans serious local and systemic symptoms can be seen. Severe pain, tenderness and hemorrhages can occur. These can lead to shock, nausea, hypotension, weakness, dizziness and periods of unconsciousness. Skin and tissue necrosis can occur in the most serious situations. Most fatalities are associated with poor clinical management or neglect to be treated.

The puff adder is a bad tempered snake. Long fangs, potent venom and excellent camouflaging ability make it extremely dangerous. Their reluctance to flee and habits of sunning by footpaths, lying quietly when approached are the reasons why this snake is responsible for the most snake bite fatalities in Africa.
