Mozambique - Santa Maria

Well, earlier this year OOOODS / myself decided to visit Santa Maria opposite the Portugese Islands and Maputo. This is the only section of the Moz coast that we had not yet done having travelled down from Pemba - Beira - Maputo.
So a long weekend was set this year in Feb. and Riaan - Harties(in his Xtrail) and his mate decided to join us.
We left Jhb via Pongola - Cosi Bay -Ponta D' Ouro, where we stayed over at Malongane

We had quite a thunder storm that night which made packing up a bit of a pain...

Road just past Malongane

From Malongane to the Maputo elephant reserve approx. 30km (1 - 2 hour drive)

There are two entrances to the Maputo elephant reserve one South and one further West. You pay R80 p/p and R80 p/vehicle no matter how long you stay in the reserve. This is the only way to Santa Maria. Yes there are still ellies wandering about!

From the Entrance to Santa Maria is approx 70km. (3/4 hour drive)
DSC07259 (Medium).JPG
There are lots of beautiful inland lakes along the route

Santa Maria: A small village with no more that a shop, bottle store and a few houses. There are no more that 3-400 residents here and most of them work either in the lodges or on the Portugese islands. (Islands in the backround) literally a few 100m.

One of the beaches just 1km North of Santa Maria!

We found a nice little camp site toilet, and cold shower, nothing fancy but really beautiful. R50.00 p/p....

......And again....
DSC07342 (Medium).JPG
We went home via Komatie poort, but it was not a pleasant road....lots of corrugation....and, a boaring drive. Should have opted for Ponta exit. :disgust:

Would we do it again? ABSORLUTELY!!!

Mark,
Did you wet a line at Hell's Gate. Awesome fishing spot. I try and go there at least twice a year and then you get best of both worlds, fishing and nice sand driving.

A.J. wrote:Hey Mark did you refuel somewhere or was the diesel enough in the main tank? What range is needed?
Nee wat AJ, dit is nie nodig nie, van die grens tot by Santa Maria is maar 90km.
Jy kan vol maak by Manguzi so 15km voor die grens.

ps. daar langs die Wimpy in Pongola is 'n klein slaghuis, hulle billies / wors is baie lekker. En bring vir my ook asb 'n bottel 'ouma se chilli sous' saam. Dis vrek warm en baie lekker :!:

What info do you need? The contact details of the stand owner seems to no longer exist.

We just went there and paid

Looks like an amazing trip you took. Moz is soooo far from Cape Town. Definitely plan to get there someday.

Cameron, petrol moola for the trip from Hilton to where ever, camping was R50.00 pppn, and your food and drinks. Plus some spending money. Actually very cheap

Finding this post has just made my day.
I was just yesterday looking at the maps for information regarding doing a trip through this area.
I just need to find the time now.
Great pics.

hi mark busy repairing the ski vee (motor was stolen) planing to go back to santa maria and explore the mouth of the maputo river, one of the last undisturbed mangrove forests left on our east coast, heard all the fishing stories so must go and see first hand. proberly april may cooler at that time, bella vista is up stream on the estuary so might stay there will ask the fellows on forum if anyone has been there
