Has any body experienced problems with balancing shaft bushes disintegrating and lying in pieces in the sump.
Happened to me last Friday on my way back home. Loss of power and all of a sudden tappets rattling like a diesel.
Hope somebody can shed some light as to what could be the cause of this happening.

You don't perhaps mean 'camshaft' ?
When your road comes to an end ...... you need a HILUX!.
Life is like a jar of Jalapeño peppers ... what you do today, might burn your ass tomorrow.
Don't take life too seriously ..... no-one gets out alive.
It's not about waiting for storms to pass. It's about learning to dance in the rain.
And be yourself ..... everyone else is taken!

No went up Voortrekkers road near Wonderboom Pta. Felt loss of power and couldnt rev more than 4000 - 4500 revs. Later that evening suddenly serious rattle. Bought the hilux second hand with 233000 km on the clock. I saw a thread on 4x4off-road forum. apparently the balancing shaft bushes can not be replaced and you have to buy the block for R23000. Hope this is not true!

Ok, when you mentioned tappets rattling, I thought you were referrining to the cam.
It would seem strange that the balance shaft bush bearings are'nt replaceable .... after all, these components are assembled as individual parts. I have actually never heard of them giving problems, sitting low in the block they obviously enjoy good lubrication. Apparently these shafts are also removed by people seeking that little extra power in the performance of the motor, but I would imagine that the crank is then sent for ballancing at an engineering works.
First check with the dealerships if the bearings are replaceable. If not then approach an automotive engineering shop to see if they can machine and fit replacements. Otherwise investigate the option of complete removal, or worst case scenario, find a good 2nd hand replacement motor, which should still be cheaper than the price you mentioned for a new block.
P.S. One thing to remember is that the balance shaft runs at twice the engine speed, which might have something to do with the reason why the bushes failed on yours if you were over revving the motor.
