'06 4.0 V6 Loose gear lever

Post by oxydog »

I went on a trip this past weekend with my '06 4.0 V6 D/Cab 4X4 where we did a lot of gravel road travelling. I noticed that my gear lever is quite loose, and at times vibrate so vigorously that it hits my knee (which hurts...). Should I have this looked at, or just keep my knee out of the way?

There is a bush inside the gearbox at the end of the gearlever. You woyuld just need to get the gear lever boot and the dust boot off. Loosen the top cover of the box that holds the gear lever in. Pull it out and replace the bush. I've been putting mine off since before the war. Its not a major problem justa major irritation. Good luck, oh get the bush from the stealers....

Also check the pin that locates to lever in that assembly Dylan said to remove ... often the aluminium casing wears and the pin is not firm ... results in a 'floppy' gear lever as well. ;-)

OK, so on my 150000 km service, I asked the guys to have a look at this, and they quoted me R 1500 for the part, and another R 300 odd for labour. I'm like, WHAT? :x

Was just gonna tell you that is the problem with the facelift(legend 40) shape, we have a fleet of +/- 10 of those bakkies. Petrol pumps is a poblem and the gear lever. R 1800 a pop for the gearlever, and it always happens just outside your warranty. What out for leaking shocks that is also a problem we found.

But once replace as good as gold

It's just too damn expensive. If it won't hurt anything (but my knee), I think I can live with it.

10 to 1 They haven't even looked at it and just quoted you on a complete gear lever replacement. The nylon bush is available separately for a few measly bucks, they're just too lazy to open it to see if it's the bush. If it's the pin, then most places will replace the complete lever because it's too much of a hassle to send it to an engineering works to have it built up or sleeved. If it's the pin and you take it to be sleeved let them put a set of bronze bushes in there .... you'll never have the pin problem again. ;-)
When your road comes to an end ...... you need a HILUX!.

Now I'm really disappointed with them. Is this bush replacement a quick and easy job? I'm not a handyman and a terrible mechanic.

Easy as pie, really! Try Gemini, (sorry just did, they have the part number but no price or stock....   ) On the KZTE it about R5.00ea, so you will prob have to try the second hand places.

Eish! Not sure I would like to be messing about with silicone or epoxy in there when those bushes are cheap enough, and if it was an emergency repair out in the Styx I would cut a temporary bushing from a rubber mud-flap or similar material.

Fixed this by just replacing the entire gear lever. Barrie at Ultimate 4X4 did it for me - for much less than Toyota originally quoted me!

The entire gear lever sounds a bit over board, surely there is just a bush at the bottom that should be replaced

I had that issue on a D4D lux the other day, half way up the gear lever there's a rubber mold(so the gear lever is actually 2 pieces molded together) on this one the rubber had play. so i cut a thick washer in half and welded it in to join the 2 together. it will never have play again! its a pitty i didn't take any pics :(
