Urgent advice on my Hilux Illness
Hi Guys
I may have an Illness. Since I could remember round about being 5, I fell in love with the old Round Head light, round arch Hilux +- 79-83 models. I have always wanted one badly. Had a chance to buy a good one, but let it slip through my fingers 2 years ago, now its gone.
I have an option for one again, but the prices the guys are asking is getting out of hand. I will not rest until I have one someday.
To me the body is the most important thing, as they are 30+ years old, and finding parts are very difficult.
There is one, the guy wanted R47K with the Chinese 4Y inside, 1980 model. Its probably the best one I have seen in a long time, inside and out mostly good and original. he has since sold the engine and is asking R35 as is, stil has all other components.
What should I do? What do you guys think about the price though, it seems high, but I have looked at about 25+ and cannot find a good one at a good price. Either the price is to high, or the Lux is un-saveable.
Below is a pick of it, before the engine came out.
All comments would be much appreciated. Of course the wife is against all Hilux purchases.
Or should I just let the idea go?

Is en was ook nog altyd crazy oor daai shape, dis van die mooistes! Moet jy koop of nie? Dit kan jy net jou self antwoord, hoe lief en groot is jou passie vir n Hilux en hoeveel kan of wil jy op hom spandeer? Ek is ongelukkig een van die stupid mense wat dit sou betaal...
Is gebed jou spaarwiel of jou stuurwiel?

Re: Urgent advice on my Hilux Illness
in a case like this its not about the market value, or resale value, its about how much is it worth to you, and how badly you want one and how much you are willing to pay
if you or someonewants it badly enough, then the price could even seen as not bad
only you know how badly you want it, and if its worth it.
self know what I am like when I want something.
good luck

Re: Urgent advice on my Hilux Illness
I owned two new hiluxes years ago(1983 and then again in 1984) and found them to be bullet proof.I still see a few of them running around my area driven by the locals and they seem to be in fair condition taking the model into consideration.

And again i say WHAT, HOW MUCH, HOEVEEL is da price for LOVE. If you buy it with a calculator in your mind and hope you will recover money spend on things one day in the future, then forget it. IF you buy for love of HILUX's and it becomes sort of your hobby and care for it as part of the family, BUY

Classic luxes. I would pay 30k and no more. Without the engine maybe 20k. Go with it if it feels right. -My 2c-

Re: Urgent advice on my Hilux Illness
Thanks allot guys for the advice, and all's opinions. I must say my gut says just buy it, because I have missed the one I was suppose to have, and as you guys say, they are getting very scarce, well good ones anyways. This one body wise is deffinetly the best one out of about 20 - 30 I have looked at. But still R35K seems to much. Im not the richest man, so I have to take the price into considiration. Its not that I worry about getting money back later, because Ill never sell it, but just I need cash to fix it up as well, and a high purchase price prolongs the whole process.
I think R20K also seems fair, but dont think this guy will budge. I'll have to try.
Thanks again. Will update you on the progress!!

Re: Urgent advice on my Hilux Illness
Found one guys, had to buy it. Got it on Friday. Still original paint and 178 000 km from new. Ford V6 fitted when new trough Toyota. Still in excellent condition. ! or 2 minor oil leak issues, that's about it. Just looking to change the grill and lights to the round light one 1 year earlier than this one. But this one came with the 5 speed already.
I'm over the moon excited about this one!!!!

Patience is a virtue for he who waits...very nice. You forgot to tell us the price that you stole it for, as there did not seem to be a lot of arguments about that. Looks good & strong!!!

Re: Urgent advice on my Hilux Illness
Thanks Guys, I'm over the moon. Paid R50K. Seems allot, but if you see it in real life, think you would understand.
Original Paint, except bonnet, this has been resprayed, do no Y?
No Rust, as in 99.9% close to nothing, Not on the roof Gutters, not even underneath the rear or front wheel arches and side fenders. Not on the bin or at the back underneath the bin. Only the tailgate at the bottom, but fixable.
Dash looks like it was put in yesterday, no cracks. Original tape deck radio, still working. Only one crack on the plastic surrounding the instruments of the fan and radio.
Original Mileage from new, 178K odd kilos.
I think R50 was worth it after the advice and opinions I got. I'm the 3rd owner, previous one bought it in Des 2010 from the original owner.
Some small mechanical fixes to do, and nicer wiring in engine bay.
