kz kilo's done?

Post by Oupa Stig »

Noticed a few guys have had to do expensive work on their KZ motors.
Bought my KZ new because I thought diesel was supposed to last bettet than petrol...
Little survey, so we can see what to look out for in future RE high mileage KZ motors:
210 000kms
All still original, incl injectors, clutch, pumps etc.
Only service related bits changed, obviously.
Clutch is on it's way out, beginning to hear faint "wiep" when changing 1st to 2nd and 2nd to 3rd, when all else is quiet.
Timing belt done.

If we get some comparisons from other KZ guys, we might get an idea of what to keep an eye out for, and maybe avoid expensive repairs...
I feel a lot less wise at 45 than I did at 15.

Ian, you've had some expensive repairs, though not as expensive as I would have thought.
I am not much of a fundi when it comes to motors, so the same work would have cost me more!
My previous truck - Nissan 2.4 box shape had 460 000 kms on clock when I sold it to a builder - still see it around Joburg 7 years later. Only hassle with the Nissan was oil at plugs- valve stem seals. Motor had never been opened, had only replaced fan, fuel pump. Carb was finnicy.
Having driven my KZ myself from new, treated it fairly well, hope to get better milage than with the nissan...

Touchin 350000km,

Bought with 64000km, had intercooler installed at 72000km.

Only replaced clutch at 127000km due to leaking oil seal on gearbox.
Further, only normal services(self).

And still pulling like a train!

Bought with 174 000 on > Now 225 300 kms

She has NEVER left me by the roadside (even when the front diff was "giving birth" while in NAM last year June)! Best is she does not use a drop of oil between services!

Cambelt done on 200 000
Clutch done aroud 210 000
Front diff rebuilt 230 000 - input shaft bearing collapsed causing HUGE noise! Hoppy diagnosed and rebuilt the unit - better than new!

Drive it myself and change oil and filter every 5000ks. Some people say its a waste of money - I can feel the difference, and its MUCH cheaper than a turbo rebuild!
10 000k service done by either Toyota or Hoppy or JB's Auto Repairs (whoever is available at the time).

I guess its just the name of the game with vehicles. Some luckier than others.I bought it with 140 000km on the clock and almost put 100 000km so far myself.Sounds like alot of repairs to have done, but I do service regularly even under 10 000km, aspecially when going on long trips. maybe I should do the oil and filters every 5000km, sounds like a good plan and not really expensive. I also let it idle for a few min after stopping if its been doing over 100km/h. If just driving slowly 60km/h around home area prob just let it idle for 30secs before switching off.having the head replaced was a bit of a shocker, but I think it was due to cooling problem back then. Im going to fit an aftercooler, I think it is definately an advantage for a turbo diesel motor.

Bought mine on 252k km's, didn't know how it was driven. Serviced myself and did the oil changes every 5000 km's, and now driving it like it should. Once left me on the side of the road due to a burnt harness, but that could happen with any vehicle, especially when people cut corners and do not know what they're doing when adding accessories, etc.

2011 replaced rear diff - R14k, own stupidity, did not check oil level before trip. Also serviced front CV joints, can't recall costs now but wasn't much.

Motor redone at 323k km's - R25k, some spares like radiator I had bought/replaced myself to cut costs.

Now sitting on 328k km's, just did Botswana/Namibia last December no major hassles except slight overheating, needle only moved just a bit, which I suspect viscuos fan as it was never replaced.

Tumelo, I also think the life of a diesel has a lot to do with how it is driven! IF you drive it like a GTI and don't idle down after hard work, it is going to hit you in the pocket sooner than later!

I shop around and use Caltex Delo 400 oil (last change R189 for 5L [book says 6-7L depending if filter is fitted or not, but Toyota usually bills for 6L]) and filter (AZ230 AFAIK = R145) and about 3/4 hour's work. I can feel a difference after the oil change. Motor runs quieter and smoother!

For now I'm trying the Rimula and so far so good, did an oil change last Friday, and yes it does make a huge difference

At the time I wanted to Dilo Gold I did not get, but as Murphy would have it, saw it at Makro Crownmines yesterday when I took the old lady shopping :mocking:

Had two...both cracked cylinder heads, on one the turbo went as well.
...and I don't drive like a maniac and very particular about services.

I am cured of diesel for ever and a day.

Now a converted petrol head and my Hilux 4.0 is standing on 301 000 and my wife's prado 3.4 V6 on 306 000...

No hassles. Viva Toyota (but not KZ...in my opinion not their finest moment).

There is a difference between the Delo Gold and Delo 400 - see the thread elsewhere on this site - the specs actually differ.

Have heard good things about Shell Rimula as well - from diesel mechs!

Bought mine on 165 000, was already chipped with intercooler. front cw&p, at about 200 000 R6000, Had a head cylinder replaced at 230 000 R14 000, clutch at 225 000 R3000, I do minor servicing myself, now standing on 260 000. Going to get a bigger exhaust and freeflow with EGT. I'm still happy as it is still pulling like a train!

Bought vehicle on 160 000km, SAC chipped with intercooler. Had to replace the SAC chip at around 170 000km with a new model/version (the older type chip was faulty). Symptom: engine cuts out while driving with the engine management light comes on at the same time. Battle to start the vehicle again. The vehicle only started when the chip cooled down. Replaced the chip - R3500 - and have had no problems. Service every 10 000km.

Got my KZ on 135 000km had Chip and Intercooler from SAC already.

Now on 210 000km - Had to replace ECU (R2000) + Clutch (R3500) and a few minor little things.

Service every 7500Km and Still Running Like a Dream.

ABS is my only issue, i think the pump if bust as it makes my break pedal shudder when breaking a very low speeds, but this is project on its own.

Got my Kz on 228251km and in need of some TLC. Paid less than R100k for it.

Now on 240000km and work done to date:

4 BFG 30.5x9.5 R15 AT R8000
Replaced tie rod ends R1200
Replaced heat exchanger in cab and speedo cable R2900
Balanced prop shaft and replaced universals R1500
Replaced worn out leather panels on seats R700
Replaced worn shocks all round with Gabriel Safaris R1500
Full Mikem suspension R7800 (self)
Cirrus Inter-cooler R5000 (self) :boss:
All oils in diffs, gearbox and transfer replaced R1000 (self)
All belts except timing R300 (self)
Alternator tensioning block and bolt R98
Custom built full alu bull bar and canopy with full length door and spare wheel carrier. R18000 (self + paid for welding) :dance1:

Turbo shaft seals on the way out. Yet to be replaced.
Rear diff spider gears on the way out. Yet to be replaced
Ball joints and rear bearings are also on the list. But not critical.

Head still perfect, but i suspect the radiator and thermostat was replaced by the previous owner since it is working very well. New injector tips also done by previous owner R3000
Stickers from the original Toyota air-con parts date 2009...

Still incredibly happy with Tintin. But i do foresee a d4d build in the future. :cooldude:

I should'a kept me darn mouf shut - since starting this thread (with NO replacements/repairs other than service related) I have had to do the waterpump @ R4k and the propshaft @ R2k.... Propshaft was probably hurt when bouncing through millibangalala, once again proving there's no substitute for 4wd... :alvarin:

Btw, changed the settings on my phone, and now all these darn smileys are making faces at me.... :wth:

Kinda' cute...
I feel a lot less wise at 45 than I did at 15.

My skoonpa se werk bakkie is 'n enkel kajuit 4x4 KZ.

Bought my 2001 KZ 4x4 DC at 120k km in 2004 with a SAC inter-cooler and chip.
Today at 283k km.
Apart for the normal services (5k km oil change and 10k km oil and filters), brakes, tires, batteries, fan belts and cam belts (replace it myself for the second time recently to found out how easy it is.
Added an extra blade to the rear suspension and changed the shocks to Monroe Gas shocks.
Added an extra 60lt fuel tank and dual battery system, roof rack, home made alu-cab and solar panel on top.
I have replaced the rear wheel bearings and cleaned the injectors at 200k before a 11k trip to Tanzania just to be safe.
Replaced the front wheel bearings at around 230k km to be safe.
The rubber connecting pipe between the turbo and air cleaner cracked and I replaced it.
What else? Every time I get an itch I think how many lt diesel I can fill up with on a monthly installment of a new vehicle and keep on enjoying my KZ!

My Pa se KZTE s/c 4x2 staan nou op 487000km 2001 model.
