Hilux Suspension Choices

Post by Stockman »

I am reaching the point of shock absorber replacement. My dilemma is that my vehicle has performed well for 85000km on the standard shocks, barring it having a very hard rear end. This hard rear end equates to shocking gravel road handling, particularly when empty.

So, what to do?
OME R16k, EFS R15.5k, TJM R6k (shocks only), Camil R14k, Standard R3k.

The main question in my mind is: Can the aftermarket suspensions solve the loose characteristics of the vehicle? If not, then why spend the money?

Don't need extra lift, got spacers up front.

Look forward to the advice!

The aftermarket shocks are intended for heavy-duty work, so I don't think it will solve your problem.

Replaced Samurai's suspension with OME some 18 y ago after my daughter nearly had a fatal accident when she lost control of the bakkie on a gravel road. The difference is as night and day ! It is still performing well, so much so that passangers this past weekend remarked how well the bakkie performs on the gravel road (Same road just in MUCH worse condition)

Had OME in my d/cab vigo, you can't compare the standard with the OME. Remember you can't have spacers if you want to go with any aftermarket suspension like,OME, Ironman, EFS. etc. But speak to the sales person, maybe I got it wrong.

Thanks for the input.

Yes Jacques the spacers will have to come out if an aftermarket suspension is fitted.

Please have a look at Mikem as well.

Look at all the top end car programs on Discovery channel and the like, they all upgrade to Bilstein shock absorbers, not matter what the application.

Just my opinion and not dissing the rest of the suspensions.

I had similar problem with my Hilux to the extend that I wanted to buy a kidney belt.

I then started to deflate my rear tyres to only 1.6 Bar. This made a huge difference on road handling as well as the tyre life of my mud terrains (getting excess of 70 000km with minor "heal and toe" .

Went on a accredited 4x4 course with African Off Road (Tinus Botha) and they fully supported my idea of driving with deflated tyres at the back, front is still 2.2 Bar.

Try it and would like to have your response.

I fitted a 4" Pro Comp Suspension 170K ago and is still going like a boat on the Vaal Dam.
