The unthinkable - can it happen?
In the 'old' days it was known that the speedo could be turned back to a lower mileage for obvious reasons.
Can this happen to a 2005+ Hilux?

Well I know guys that can turn back the readings on Bmw's, so I'm sure it can be done on a Hilux...

Re: The unthinkable - can it happen?
I am no expert but know one thing, it is illegal
I would think what you see on the LCD odometer could be changed, but will not be surprised if it is also logged on the chip, same thing as flashing your chip and remapping it, it keeps a log and the dealer would be able to see it on the log...........

Re: The unthinkable - can it happen?
You can have it done by an electronic expert or simply replace the instrument cluster with a secondhand one with lower kilos, both ways are illegal and i won't advise it.

You should be able to confirm this if the vehicle has been for a service or been in an accident. you can make use of TransUnions site to get more detail on your vehicle... some of the info is for free and some you have to pay for

A DIY job if you buy an instrument cluster from a written off vehicle.

Can compare the value stored in the control unit versus what is displayed on the cluster. The other option is to check the vehicle history on NATIS

Re: The unthinkable - can it happen?
recently saw a big stink about a gent that traded in his Ford bakkie - days later the 2nd hand dealer advertised his bakkie for about 100 000km LESS !!
so YES, it does happen !! (probably the only reason for a service history - this way it would be "more difficult" to hide a 100 000 km ....)

You can also draw the service history from Toyota, they can show you km's which can assist as a guideline.
Know what you don't know.

Re: The unthinkable - can it happen?
Visited the local Toyota the other day, I had some questions for the service manager, and while I was there they were investigating a 2.7 D/C that a guy bought privately with a full service record (stamps and all) from their branch, however, they had no record of it and there were no job card numbers on the service history. On top of that the vehicle was serviced there only once, on 120000km, but the purchaser bought the vehicle with 95000km on the clock!
This re-iterated the fact that unless you know the entire history of a vehicle on a private sale (buying a friend's vehicle or something like that), it is always better to buy directly from dealers as they offer assurances on the specifications of the vehicles.
