Dakar 2015
Nasser al-Attiyah, 9 times winner and 3rd in last year’s Dakar, [Giniel de Villiers was 4th], has now switched to a Toyota and driving for a Belgium team.
He says he wants to be the first winner for Toyota.
This is going to be an interesting contest, hope Giniel wins - he deserves to win the laurel for Toyota!
Hope we get better TV coverage this year.

Re: Dakar 2015
The TV coverage last year was pathetic! 15 minutes interviews, 10 minutes adverts, less than 5 minutes driving. Not the way ot used to be.

Leeroy is 14th, 4 mins behind

Nassar only drove the Mini for the first time a few days before the event ... wonder what the politics behind that story is .... End of stage one and he now wants to start moaning about the suspension not matching his driving style ....

After last night Geniel is in third place as Nasser Al-Attiyah was penalised with 2 minutes due to speeding between stages.
View Original
some footage:Handed a two minute penalty during the evening for speeding, Nasser Al-Attiyah has seen his victory on the first special stage of the Dakar slip between his fingers as well as the first place in the general standings. The Mini driver drops to seventh place in the provisional standings, leaving Orlando Terranova to lead the rally.

correction - confirmed they showed the 2014 stage.
Now it makes sense why De Villiers only lost 50 seconds, while they showed him parked for 15 minutes ....

earlier in the day yes.
at 22:30 they had a segment of day one of 2015 - with LOTS of cutbacks to 2014 .... could actually have made a good 90 minute show linking the progress and where drivers moved to etc ....[/quote]
Maybe I'm wrong, but to me it was all 2014 coverage and I specifically stayed up to watch the 22h30 coverage. They didn't even show the new Peugeot's lastnite.

Giniel is 2nd on stage and now 2nd overall
Al-Attiyah took back over 8 mins on Giniel
Leroy finished 10th after a great drive where he lead the stage for awhile - be interesting to hear what happened
Another SA built Hilux driven by Ten Brinke is 3rd

Re: Dakar 2015
WRT the coverage, be careful, there are some shows around 2014 dakar and there is another around the 2015 one. Thats whats causing the confusion. Even the 2015 one had alot of highlights from last year in it.
Giniel is up to 2nd as Gordon who was 2nd has issues with overheating brakes
Poulter is 12th and approx 27 mins behind
but yip, nassir is Flying!!!
Hilux FTW!!!!!

the whole site is very confusing.
they need to make it simpler to read and make sense of what is going on. they have digits in brackets etc. but its up to you to figure out what that means...

A tweet from Geniel regarding yesterdays stage (stage 3):
Good stage today for us. Caught up to Nasser, then had a puncture but we managed to catch again. 2nd on stage and 2nd overall

Re: Dakar 2015
Dankie vir die inligting rondom die specs!
As Geniel se kar hou, klink sy kanse goed op die oomblik! Hy moet net so aanhou!
En dis nou jammer van Poulter - Wonner wat daar gebeur het dat hy so ver terug gesak het.

Re: Dakar 2015
Seems Poulter hit a ditch and broke a control arm, costing him 45 mins..
Giniel still second at the end of stage 3. Today they start at an altitude of 3000m. The Hilux is going to feel that!
Thanks for the pics Cassie!

He hit a pothole/ditch 10km's into the stage damaging a rear control arm - took 50min to repair, so he's just over an hour behind now.

Aaah, maak sin dan! Ek suppose damages is maar deel van die game! Net bly hy is nog in die race!
Vir interesantheid - Soso sy control arm nou, ry hy sulke spares saam, of moet hy wag vir support vehicle om een te bring?
Mag sy support team hom even help in 'n stage?

From what I understand they have certain spares with them. Only makes sense to carry things like a control arm coz there is a high possibility of breaking the same

Re: Dakar 2015
Oh by the way, did anyone notice on the broadcast of stage 2 (or was it stage 3, i'm not sure) for the bikes there was one of the top contenders who was lost and the helicopter was following him and filming. It was clear that the helicopter guys gave him directions.
When he did find his way he gave them a thumbs up for helping. Surely thats not rite! If they assist one person who is lost, they should assist everyone, else its unfair.
Easiest thing, dont assist anyone!!

Re: Dakar 2015
Yes they do carry critical spares with them, like control arms, brake calipers, belts, small stuff that can be changed to get out of the stage.
Yes the support trucks can help them, but these trucks leave after all the competitors have and that's normally a couple of hours later. As in Nani Roma's case he was towed in by his support truck ( some 800kms), replaced the engine and he's back racing, albeit 6-7 hrs behind.
You own team mates can help aswell - Roma will now carry extra spares, etc and act as back up for the other mini's. They will even go as far as stripping Roma's mini for spares to keep the others going.

These drivers and co-drivers are pretty competent bush mechanics !!!!
The support trucks only enter the stage a few hours later - so you MUST be able to do the basic repairs yourself.
A program on Discovery this week about a privateer biker that did the Dakar last year - IMPRESSIVE !!

I know other competitors can help. and your own support crew + team mates, but the camera helicopter? Especially with directions, not repairs. That doesnt sound fair even if its not against the rules.

As a matter of interest. According to Dirk von Zitzevitz, he and Geniel had a huge scare 10km from the end of stage-3 where they caught a huge jump and landed on the nose of the Hilux....

Sad news
The Polish bike rider Michal Hernik (no. 82) was found dead on the selective section of the third stage of the rally between San Juan and Chilecito at kilometre 206.
The circumstances surrounding his death have yet to be determined, as the competitor did not show any external signs of an accident. One report said he was not wearing his helmet when found

Really sad indeed. Evidently he was found about 300m of the track with no visible signs of a crash. This was his first Dakar. To me it sounds like he dehydratedDingo wrote:Sad news
