So I am looking at doing a full respray over some shoddy body work and some rust spots on my bakkie. What would you recommend as an effective and permanent rust killer/converter? Would I be able to use a primer over the rust converter?

IMO the rust converters today are not what they used to be and are really only effective on mild surface rust. Either way, I think it's better to get in there with a small sandblaster before you do any coatings. You can spray over the rust converter if you use that as a protective layer, but if it's been blasted you can use an etch primer like red oxide which can be sprayed and not leave brush stokes like the converter will.

Do 2 coats of red oxide etch primer for peace of mind, then automotive grey primer. If there is minimal pitting you can go straight to a filler coat after the grey primer, but if there is severe pitting you would do well to use spot putty first, flat it down and then filler coat.

SprayOn makes two types, Rust Remover and Rust Converter. Compared to Holts the SprayOn Converter leaves less difficult to remove over-application and seems to penetrate slightly more. The SprayOn is also less viscous and runs into tight spots and cracks better. The Remover works great for light surface rust prior to priming/filler - it leaves the metal nice n shiny for a final acetone wipe. Both claim they also prime the metal... rather add some proper primer into the scenario.

Chisel away the flaky or solid chunks as best you can unless you need some for structural purposes:/, then apply a good couple of converter coats with few hour rest periods in between. Plascon Acryline also makes a 2K Etch Filler Primer which hits two or three birds. Make sure you use the correct hardener as it is different to the Acryline Paint hardener. If you don't have already, you can score a whole new compressor/spraygun setup for under 2K. Adendorff and Aircraft.

What do you guys think of spraying zink rich galv spray to areas that will be out of site?

Are you talking about *Plascozinc* ? That stuff works fairly well but on clean bright surfaces. If there is already rust there it will just bubble through in a short time.
