I have had ny Hilux(2700i 4x4 d/c, 2001 model srx) for about 9 years now. It has a few engine mods such as gas flowed head, chip, free flow and it runs on 31" tyres. With the recent massive fuel price increases I have been a bit concerned. I decided to adjust my driving style by avoiding the post 3000 rpm portion of the rev range( not always but mostly). This has given me some remarkabke results.....i have been consistently better than 7.2km/l and the last 2 tanks have produced astinishing resukts of 7.8 and 7.87km/l. I cruise at a cinstant 110km/h (true speed) and have heavy traffic for my afternoon commute but also no freeway traffic for my morning commute. So I am mightily impressed at how well she is doing.

What have other forum members been doing to ease tye fuel price pains and have you had success?

I started using Sasol 10ppm and 2SO in my Fortuner.

consumption went from 8.7km/L to 9.2km/L

Then I used it from GP to Durbs and it went to 11km/L

Back now for 2 weeks and it's on 10km/L

there is some truth in what you saying Craig.
But it's honestly not that practical all the time, especially with petrol engine.

I have been thru the range of hilux engines. Starting with the good old 2.2 donkey.
Believe me, Sir Lowry's Pass.... 5 guys with just their weekend fishing tackle and mosly food :D:
60kph, 3rd gear , 5000rpm. trucks were passing me. :deadhorse:

i once took drive with wife and 3 kids to durbanville from town.
Filled up at waterfront Caltex. Cruised at 90-100kph. Sunny day, no wind, sunday afternoon traffic. Came back and filled up at same pump. 9km / lt. :shock2:
This is unheard of for the 2.2. I consistently got 5-6km / lt.

But imagine tackling the 200km trip to Arniston cruising at that speed. Not just the speed... Those hills, and trucks on that N2... you going have to gear down alot.

Even the 2.7 was a bit underpowered for those hills.

Now with the D4D, Sir Lowry's Pass is no longer a reason for cold sweats. Infact i do gear down on it to 4th, but more not to labour the engine. Since the speed limit up there is 80kph, i find in 5th, i have to push accelerator a bit more, which by all accounts is never good thing, causing EGT to climbs, turbo warming... so i rather gear down, quarter throttle, and have some reserve left to overtake easily.

COnsistently over the last 3 yrs with the bakkie 10km / lt.

SO yes, it maybe possible to better your consumption a bit by adjusting driving style, but you not going to get D4D figures with a 2.2 in real world applications. Real world i mean Sunday cruise to Durbanville VS heading off to arniston when you heard kob is biting :D:

There must have been something seriously wrong with your 4Y Hilux. Mine could do 110 in 3rd at 5000rpm....

But back on topic, driving style is the biggest problem in fuel consumption that you can have a direct effect on. I can get 9km/l driving relaxed at 115 - 125 with my Prado on the open road light foot. Pushing hard around my appointments and work, I can get it to drop to 7km/l doing 140 and sometimes even more.... By relaxing and spending that 5 minutes more on the road it goes back to 7.8-8 km/l.

So yes petrol might not rival the diesel for consumption, but changing how and when you drive, has the biggest impact irrespective of petrol or diesel.

Needless to say after two 3.0 d4d Fortuners in the garage, I prefer the V6 Prado responsiveness when driving anywhere, and that 80 - 140 overtaking power that is able surprise still many newer Diesel and petrol vehicles given that you have to make quickly when putting foot.

Fortuners averaged 10km/l and the Prado is doing approx 8km/l. Will I go back to diesel, not sure.. Maybe if I can buy a LC 200V8. That is just the love of ease, not fast though, but very consistent and hushed. No real feel of speed that is why they feel slow until you start measuring against another similar vehicle.
Oh they just eat up the road or even no road for nothing. Yes there is one in the family that i drive quite often on longer trips.

i had two 4y's. One SA built and one import.
Import one was knew, with less than 10000km on the clock.

Both struggled up Sir Lowry's Pass hill.

Flat ground, it was OK... but any hill... :frustrated:

Not to forget tyre pressure guys! I loaded a lot of extras on my Jimny, anything and everything you can imagine as this is still one of the last cheap solid front axle vehicles on the market. My consumption dropped from 13km/l to about 9km/l (also thanks to the nice oversized BF's).

I increased the tyre pressure from (1.6 front and 1.8 rear according to the book) to about 2.0 ~ 2.1. My fuel consumption improved to 10km/l in town.

I use the same method of filling, at the same pump, at the same garage (fill to 1st click).

Same here as most are reporting. Keeping it easy and steady is key.
Last long trip I did, I changed from day drive to night driving.
Open roads, no more trucks to overtake, no more busy Ultra Cities, decelerate for slower traffic..
Just keeping it rustig I upped to at least an extra Km to the Litre.
I got arrested for driving naked. I guess I shouldn’t have put four wheels, an engine, and a steering wheel on my bathtub.

Last tank was 7,95km/l......shes getting even better! Im doing a trip to Struisbaai with her weekend after next. Keen to see what the long road holds!
