SFA Insurance

Post by Agteros »

Hi guys

Do you have insurance on your old SFA's??
I have insured mine for R50000 but I know if something happens to Agteros I'm going to have problems as it is an old 1986 model but looks like in condition of a 1997. Problem is it is not in the book anymore. I think the last time (couple of years back) book value was in the order of R34000. Insurance wants a written valuation by a dealer and no stealer are interested to put his hand on paper for me for insurance purposes. My feeling is that the real value is in the order of R65000-R75000 as a result of its condition and extras.

Hugo, I was contacted by FNB today as they launched their own insurance company. Decided to get a quote on my cars to compare. My Hilux is also insured for R50k currently, but I informed him that I'm heavily modifying it and replacement value would be close on R200k, but market value would be much less. He didn't seem fazed by it and said he will give a quote on both R50k and R200k. On my Merc he said that I have to have it valued by a registered car club and certified as a collectible car, as it doesn't have a market or trade value, otherwise I might have a problem when I claim.

Also important to list all the accessories and extras on your SFA, otherwise you could come horribly short in the event of a claim. Bulldog is fully insured including all the extras, which are all listed on the Policy.

Johan, your UberHilux would require a dedicated Policy! Only one of its kind in the World.... Priceless! :)

Hi Johann - thanks for your reply - yes, they are always quite willing to supply a quote based upon a value you provide (and then you pay premiums according to that) but come the day of a claim they strictly will look at the book value and if you have not provided concrete proof to them prior to the "loss" , that you have lots more extras, the book value or whatever is what you are going to get.

My problem is my Lux is not in the book anymore and I can not find a dealer willing to give me a written valuation

Hi Eric - since I suspect Bulldog (1987) is also not in the "book" anymore, without the specified extras, how does your insurance knows the value of the vehicle alone?

We took a nominal figure for Bulldog (three years ago, ±R45k) and then added the value of the accessories, which more than doubled that amount. The way the accessories' pricing goes up is probably an advantage in this case because their combined value is worth more than the so-called book value of the actual vehicle.

But it is probably more for my own peace of mind: I would hate to put this to the test by having a claim. I am insured with M&F and they have always been very fair to me in the past when I've had to claim for something or other. Our business and my home and boat is also insured through them. But I must admit I would be very tempted to insure the vehicle through Tuffstuff if starting anew. They have had excellent reports for the kind of cover they provide their clients and they do specialise in 4x4 Insurance.

Hi, just did revalution on my hilux, retail value was far too high from Zurich insurance.,
With canopy and ltd edition mags I insured for R91k. I think they want you too pay for more and then cliam time they do not obligate.

Digging up a very old post, but seeing as my van was stolen...

Mine was insured for 40k. It's a 89 model, no idea what the book value is. I'll let you all know what I got out in the end...

I had an interesting discussion with outsurance the other day. They recon vehicles that does not appear in "the book" anymore will be payed out on the average price as can be found in the autotrader for that specific make and model.
B.T.W hop-along is also insured fo 50k.

So, even after trying to fight it, the insurance will pay out R29,500 after all accesses  :eh: The sad reality is that I'll have to revoke my Hilux club membership. One day I might try again, but I just can't afford a replacement now. I loved that lux and I'll be stalking this forum for a long time.

Mine is insured for R149 000 with all the listed exras with cross country insurance a specialsed 4x4 insurance which covers you up to the Congo. You will have to take the vehicle to one of their inspection depot's and you need to provide proof or quotes of all your extras including engine, in my case I put in a 7mge. I was paying R475,00 p/m but with my last claim untill its been recoverd by the other party has gone up a little. I have been with them for 10 years and they have paid every claim with no hassle. Their no is 011 215 8802
