Cracked tyres
So while stripping the bits and bobs off the lex in prep for her bodywork TLC I noticed that one of my tyres is quite badly cracked in places
The cracks are mostly on the lugs but there are some in the 'base' of the tyre itself.
So the stoopid question of the day is... How dangerous is this?
(I'm pretty sure I know the answer, but I'm in denial about having to buy new tyres )

Re: Cracked tyres
What tyres are they and how old are they?
Just because it says "4WD" doesn't make it an off-road vehicle.

My Coopers het die selfde gedoen en toe sy blokke begin afgooi. Ek is megedeel deur die banmd handelaar, dat die rubber van 'n band nie 'n baie lang leeftyd het nie dan moet jy dit vervang. My Coopers was +/- 5 jaar oud.

Re: Cracked tyres
Jonathan, I'll wait for your pics, but sometimes you get what they call "spin cuts" from sharp rock when the tyres spins a bit or slip. Looks like a crack, as if you've sliced the tread lugs with a knife.
Hopefully for you its that. Not any $$ then.
I see this new mobile fitment company is advertising what they call good tyre deals
www.tyretraders.co.za , not sure if the prices are good though.

Re: Cracked tyres
Okay so managed to pry myself off the couch to take photo's.
Do you think i can get a descent photo? NO. Typical.
Anyways, if you squint at the photo's just right you'll get the idea. Admittedly now that I squint at them it seems this might be paranoia. Rather safe than sorry I guess...
There are loads of these little cuts, some look deeper than others but its difficult to judge...

Re: Cracked tyres
Interesting Jonathan, in pic no.2, the vertical cuts on the left, I have the same type of 'cut' marks on the one front tyre of my Kumho 33's... possible defect?

Just ease up on the throttle in the rough Johnathan .... that's "spin cuts" only. Not too serious .... battle scars.

Re: Cracked tyres
Many of the softer compound tyres develope these little scars, but mostly they're just superficial. In the tread section they're not much to be concerned about, but in the sidewall they pose a risk and should then be changed. Remember that the tread area has more plys and layers of steel mesh and is far less likely to rupture than in the sidewall.

Re: Cracked tyres
I aggree with you Andy, but if you want to be sure just insert something into the crack to check the depth. May or may not help with your peace of mind, depending on what you find. My tyres also have similar damage to the tread area but it only seems to go as deep as the rubber and doesn't even get to the steel belt.
Just because it says "4WD" doesn't make it an off-road vehicle.

Re: Cracked tyres
No idea I'm afraid. I've done about 5000km since I bought her. There's plenty of tread left...
The thing is that she is (and was) used as a play thing so the tyres have taken a hammering...

Re: Cracked tyres
Die barste wat op my Coopers was, was baie anders as op die bande van jou. Dit was in die hoekke van waar die koppe uit die band uit staan en het sommer gelyk of die knoppe gaan afskeur, wat toe wel gewbeur het.

Re: Cracked tyres
Second pic is a spin cut, not a crack. It's only into the block and not into the main carcase of the tyre. It was a sharp object in the sandbox a few k's from my house. Spun the lex into the sand to test the recovery points and that happened. I took it to the local Kumho agent at the time because it was pretty new when it happened and they said I don't have to worry about it.
Put the tyres on with about 175K-180K on the clock, IIRC, so you can work it from there.

Re: Cracked tyres
Jonathan.... you have nothing to worry about mate. Those cuts you see on your tyre all seem to be superficial. I have seen much worse cuts on tyres which still worked perfect. Generelly speaking tyres should only be used for 4 years. It depends on how well they are maintained. You can get the date of manufacture on the side wall some where. IF you bought them in 2006 there should be some number like 0806 etc. the first two digits is the week number in the year and the second two digits is the year. in my example it shows week 8 of 2006.
So what I am getting at, find the number, calculate the age. IF they are less then 4 years old, don't even bother worrying about the tyres but if they are, maybe it's worth a closer look m2cw
