Roadworthy Testing update
Well, took the Hilux for a "test" roadworthy this morning, figured I might as well see exactly what was needed.
Turns out not too much :
1. Front right STeering draglinks need tightening up
2. Absolutely no activity on the right rear brake test!
3. one reverse light bulb
4. No warning triangle (although there may be one behind the seat, never looked for it!!)
Overall pretty happy, will need to get the back wheels off later to have a look, but am figuring to have somebody half decent look at the draglinks. Anyone know a decent, fair priced place in Cape Town Southern suburbs or South peninsula?

Re: Roadworthy Testing update
Not sure if this warrants its own thread in technical, if so, Mods please feel free to move.
THought I'd nip out at lunch and tackle the easy item on the list, replacing the reverse light bulb. Turns out, as ever, that nothing is as easy as it seems, and the bulb us great. the power to the bulb, on the other hand, is somewhat non existent.
Started backtracing the wiring (ground to chassis is fine), and am so far up under the front bench seat at the connector with no continuity problems.
My questions are these:
1. Where does the wiring run from under the bench seat?
2. Why do the two reverse lights appear to run independent wiring to them?
3. Considering most new cars seem to come standard with one reverse light now, why are they so picky?
AND
4. As an interim measure, can I simply run power from the Left hand side buld to the right for now?
Regards
Jason

Re: Roadworthy Testing update
This is usually caused by a poor earth connection. Use a voltmeter to see if there actually is 12v at the centre tip of the globe socket, with the bulb removed and the ignition switched on and gear lever in "R". If no voltage, I would suspect the switch, rather than the wiring.
The draglinks need to be tightened, there is an excellent article by, I think, Andrew on this in the forum, with photos.

Re: Roadworthy Testing update
There is zip current to live on the socket on the one side.
Would the switch power both sides simultaneously, or are there perhaps separate poles for each side's light?
Am searching for Andrews article now, haven't poked around too much since it is chucking it down outside yet again, and carport still not built!

Re: Roadworthy Testing update
Confusion reigns supreme.
Got dirty (and wet) last night, adjusted the rear brakes, looked almost as if the one side had been left adjusted fully "in" if that makes sense, so did my usual judging it by tightening until just hand tight. Need to slack of the handbrake just a smidgen now, but apart from that it is looking promising.
Tightened up the drag link, seems there were quite a few turns of the lock nut available, so hopefully this will pacify the examiner.
Now for the reverse lights........popped round to my brother this evening, and had to reverse into his drive. Get inside, he tellse me my reverse lights are freaky. first one comes on, then the next, then both. Me, I don't believe him, so ask him to go out and do the same. Now both work. Drove home, checked again, both work.
Will be checking again in the morning before shooting off to test station, but keep fingers crossed for me. Maybe she just needed a little driving about to get over being locked away for so long!!
Cheers for now

If you have any form of aerosol contact cleaner, then it might be worth your while to first spray all the contacts in the light fittings, as these tend to tarnish after a while, causing intermittent operation.

Good idea! Also check that each lamp holder is properly earthed .... poor earth connections can cause the same problems.Family_Dog wrote:If you have any form of aerosol contact cleaner, then it might be worth your while to first spray all the contacts in the light fittings, as these tend to tarnish after a while, causing intermittent operation.

Re: Roadworthy Testing update
Yee ha
Well, she passed. I made sure to reverse a bit before pulling into the test centre, reverse lights behaved magnificently.
Also, my adjustments to brakes and draglink were sufficient to keep examiner happy.
Net result, I have a RWC and can get her in my name now, as soon as the traffic department can get there act in gear and process the yellow form.
Thanks to everyone for the advice and assistance.
Allan, will have a good look at the ball joints on the pitman once I get a decent chance and the rain stops.
Regards

Traffic department got themselves sorted out, with a little assistance from shouting by the seller.
As of today the Hilux is officially on my name, and I consider myself legally entitled to add it to my currently non existent signature!
Cheers

I wqas hoping to do so, however, I am reliably informed by the social secretary that we already have a booking for the weekend in Elgin. So my best chance is to get the seatbelts in and make sure I take the 'Lux to the farm instead of the car.Kaspaas wrote:So I take it you will be joining us on the 28th with your newly acquired legal Hilux?

Re: Roadworthy Testing update
Jason I had a similar intermittent brake light issue with my lux, also having to fix it for roadworthy... after wasting hours tracing wires all over the chassis... I eventually opened the rear light covers, and uncovers some poor earths on the light bulb fittings, gave it all a good clean(elec kleen spray) and resoldered the earthing wires... problem solved...
I could kicked myself for not starting at the source of the problem!

Re: Roadworthy Testing update
Fortunatelt it worked well enough on the day to keep Mr tester happy. I subsequently had intermittent issues with one or the other indicators too. So have pulled the light covers off, removed and cleaned all the contacts, and sprayed liberal doses of switch cleaner through the connector boxes.RustyRod wrote:Jason I had a similar intermittent brake light issue with my lux, also having to fix it for roadworthy... after wasting hours tracing wires all over the chassis... Just because it says "4WD" doesn't make it an off-road vehicle.
