I need some advice on Auto Fortuner

Post by Tyrone D4D »

Hey guys.Me and my wife have come to a conclusion that I don't use my bakkie as a bakkie and that a fortuner is better suited for our needs. So I have started looking around and decided to look for F/lift(2009 and newer)and it must be a diesel. But now I see that most of them up for sale is Automatic and not manual.Just want to know how reliable is the auto?If I fit a chip will it mess with the box settings ect. Thanks

I drive an auto, but it is very much standard. I love it, driving it traffic is a breeze. When hitting the trails it is so easy to just manage the throttle

Auto box is very reliable and with a chip its even better! Fitted race pro to a friends auto last saturday an d he is extremely happy! Biggest bonus is it doesnt gear back to third on uphills as it used to before the chip when using cruise control!
We had a double cab 4x4 auto on the farm and we sold it with 200K on the clock and never touched the auto box
Thats 80% farm driving! Bad gravel roads sand dust! Hauling various trailers carrying fuel cattle sheep etc etc

What was the cost of the Race Pro conversion? I also have a 4.0 V6 Auto that need to be chipped.
I have the gearback issue going uphill.

Other than that is the auto a dream to drive on and off road :yahoo:

Thanks

Ja, that's why I haven't done my 4l V6 yet. Also heard it does not make such a big difference.

Awesome, thanks for this topic, Tyrone I am in the exact same situation, had a 2008 Hilux, manual 4x4..got myself a 2013 Fortuner 4x4 Auto, oh boy, what a fantastic machine!!

I love the auto, (although I was very stubborn before I drove it as I prefer manual)

My question is, can you break the gearbox? Can you miss use the gearbox, ex. driving 150km/h and shove it into 1St gear to slow down..? I know it does have clever electronics, but is it idiot proof?

There are no bad report of the auto box that I know about except maybe 1km/l heavier on the juice, comparing it to the manual.
There have been reports where the auto box jump between 2 gears on uphills when towing a heavy load, causing the gearoil to get hot, but this can be sorted by locking into the lower gear until the crest of the hill is reached before placing back into auto to cruize as normal.
I do not think that anything is idiot proof.
The longer you look after it thr longer it will look after you.
Abuse it to your detriment as I am sure that, like anything it can bite you where it hurts.
