Clear back windows?
Hi,
I'm looking at buying a new Fortuner but would like clear back windows rather than the standard tinted ones. I've seen a few on the roads with clear glass but the dealer I've seen said the factory only does the tinted glass. Would seem crazy to replace with clear glass aftermarket. Any ideas?
thanks.

Re: Clear back windows?
Hi, old ones have clear glass, then they decided for security to tint the windows, actually a request from the owners.
Maybe scrap yard, panal beater will swop?

Thanks for your response.
You mentioned "security" - does this mean its a film for smash and grab?

Die Security is maar net dat hulle nie so maklik in die kar kan sien nie. Dit is nie smash and grab nie.

Most of the tint help with smash and grab, so yes it does help with security.

O yes, and welcome Craig to the best Forum by far.
Why would you want clear windows instead of tinted?

Re: Clear back windows?
Buy a new tuna. Put sticker on each window saying "smash here to grab contents". Put some groceries in the back. Park it in the parking bay of the shopping mall. Go watch a movie. Come back two hours later. Both windows will be gone, claim from insurance, ask glass fitters to fit clear instead of tinted. Problem solved.

Re: Clear back windows?
Thanks. Some good practical advice!
>> Why would you want clear windows instead of tinted?
Purely aesthetics... I figure that if I'm spending close to 400k I should have some choice over what the car looks like! Not sure I see the "security" rationale - I mean you can see in if you get close enough and if it was for security then why not fit it to all the windows?
Perhaps I should just go with the Hilux!

Re: Clear back windows?
My choice would be for tinted windows always! It definitely helps keep the car interior temperature down and I somehow think it looks better too.
Personal choice, I guess.

Re: Clear back windows?
Can't agree more. My first Lux had dark windows, the second one didn't, and now Forest has them again, and there is a huge difference in inside temp.
Also I read somewhere that hijackers won't sommer jack a vehicle if they're not sure about the number (and size) of occupants- thus the darkened windows' supposed to help.

Re: Clear back windows?
Yip,
The sales people call it privacy glass, most modern suv's come standard with it. (see xc90, x5, prado etc)
If it's for estetics, why not smash and grab the front two one's as well, then you'll get a more uniform look.... :D

Re: Clear back windows?
I've placed my order for a new Fortuner so will have to get used to the two tone windows... Still puzzled as to why they only do the back windows and not all of them - I mean how many of us close our curtains half way?

My first Lux had dark windows all around. I remember trying to reverse it after dark, you can see zip... had to wind the window down, which kind off defeats the security thing...

Re: Clear back windows?
I have just bought a 2006 model low milage one with clear windows, will swap if you can find someone who can exchange without any damage to vehicle? The rear side glass might be glued on and breakage a possibility?

Re: Clear back windows?
I've been down this road, here my 2 cents worth:
Fortuners generally come with tinted windows all round except for the front two door windows. These are left clear for only one reason: safety/visibilty to the driver during low-light conditions.
The tinting on the standard Fortuner windows is also just a film - you should be able to have it all removed at any glass fitment centre...thus returning your vehicle to clear all round.
The shaded windows are worth considering but it's also about WHAT you have put on. Unfortunately this is one of those things where better is more expensive...but speak to a chap called Max Waspe from Defence Concepts - He has (in my opinion) the only viable product which gives you the best protection against any attack (no, it's not bullet proof - but damn tough) - and still allows visibility outwards while not giving a clear view of what is inside the car.
Hope this helps...
