Good stuff, I am also building up to old hilux's and having second thoughts about selling the sfa when Im finished. Is there anyone that can tell me if it is worth converting a 5l 3.0d to a 5l 3.0de. Have just about everything to do it but not sure if its worth it or if I should sell the pump injectors and computer box etc.

There's a company in Klerksdorp that's pretty good at repairing Mags, by the name of Weldco. Bit far from you, though.

Thanks, but Im not sure about the fuel consumption of a v8 conversion and what that would do to the value of the bakkie. I will be doing lots of driving with it and possible trips to Malawi we are planning.

Hi Chris, the V8 conversion is fine for short trips, trails and the like. If as you say you're going to be doing a lot of driving with the vehicle and long overlanding trips, the Lexus V8 is not the answer. It's far too thirsty and I think you're gonna run out of fuel between filling stops up north. Bear in mind that not every village has a fuel station, and those that have are sometimes out of fuel themselves. A long range tank with extra jerry cans is also likely to be inadequate. Then if something goes mechanically wrong along the way, you might not be able to get spares as easily as you would for the standard motors.

What motor do you have in at present?

None, i have a 3y and 5l motor one side at the mo. the 5l Im overhauling and putting in a IFS 2x4 thats for sale soon and im not so keen on the 3y, think it may be underpowerd. Im a diesel man too. think they much better, Would love to get my hands on a 2l motor. Discovered that my chances of getting a toilet made of gold was better tho.

I'm a petrol head myself, but there's a lot to be said for the old diesels ... especially when overlanding through Africa. Diesel is apparently more readily available than petrol. I also think the 3Y will be underpowered ... an alternative is to get a new 4Y knock-off and drop that into there. They are resonably cheap and apparently not too bad .... much better in my opinion would be to get an original Jap 4Y motor .... would have to be used though since new ones are no longer available .... and recon it.

Other petrol motor options would be the 22R (2.4) or the 3RZ (2.7)

You could even try the scrap merchants.

Does any one know if it is possible to take the crownwheel and pinion out of a local gearmax diff and fit it to the housing of a imported diff. I need a diff with a 4.55-1 ratio. I need it for my front diff.Diff lock would also be nice. Can anyone help?

Chris I'm open to correction here, but as I understand, the ratios are the same but the import uses a slightly bigger crownwheel and pinion which would mean that the smaller local gears would fit in the import housing. However, whether the bearing sizes match or differ I have no idea. I would also wonder how the geometry of the low centre drives compare between the import's third member and the local diff.
