5VZ-FE (Prado V6) Engine Conversion for SFA!

Post by Family_Dog »

Just got this PM from a Hiluxer on the CF...:

+++

Good day <censored> :twisted: Eric,

Hope you had a blessed festive season and that the new year holds amazing holiday trips!

I blew the head gasket on the Hilux and want to throw the fong kong motor at someone!!!

I can get a 5VZ-FE for R15 000.00.. ;D Will I need to hide my Hilux from you after fitting it? :)

+++

I think I must offer the Hiluxer a spot in my garage to do this conversion....!!!! :yahoo: :yahoo: :yahoo:

I have asked him to post full details here if he goes ahead with this! :beg:

I will even offer him a lift back to his hometown afterwards, because I am sure the new "PraLux" will not want to ever leave Klerksdorp... :dance1: :dance1:

IIRC this is almost a bolt on conversion using the Prado bell housing. The only things that need to be done is the spigot bearing .... the size differs and a new one needs to be machined), and of course the engine mounts themselves. The rest is the normal radiator and cowl, exhaust reroute, cables, pipes etc and ignition system if it's an EFI motor. :think:

Maybe someone that has more first hand knowledge can elaborate and correct any misinformation on my part. ;-)

P.S. The registration authorities in Klerksdorp do not accept this conversion as being roadworthy! :D:

How thirsty we will just have to see..

<censored> Eric, I found a motor from a local supplier for R15 000.00. Not bad considering they should be scars and I can find it cheaper than a 3RZ (R25 000).

The local shop I want to use for the EFi bits will only be open from next week and will then do some more scouting for prices and such. I would love to do most of the work myself, but work and travel will not allow for this. That and a shortage of space and tools. So this might be a bit more expensive than I bargained for. This might just ensure a professional fit.

As soon as all aspects are researched and funding can be allocated the photo's will stream in.

Willie, I took PraDog for a drive today. Coming back from the river on the open road, a guy in a bakkie tried to pull a fast one by overtaking me as well as the guy in front of me who was holding up the traffic. He had no chance - as soon as the oncoming traffic had cleared I put on the flickers and put my foot down. The V6 motor and Auto gearbox sprang into action and the silly impatient little twit who was trying to nudge me along became a distant memory as he disappeared from my rear view mirror. The growl of the V6 motor is music to one's ears! :)

I can only imagine.. same as seeing a laaitjie in his gold hide under the dashboard at the next robot.. :D:

I think I will start a fund raiser here to have the necessary funds.. then I will share as much information as possible. I would simply love having an autobox powering the drive train, but that might have to wait for now.

It would be great if Hoppy could share some pix and ideas about the requirements to stick one of these blocks into a vehicle.

Saw an interesting thing the other day while looking for a motor.. The importer had a 1VZ-FE motor on the floor running a Bi-Turbo setup. I cannot find any reference to this being standard..

Jeepers, that's an older motor (2 lit V6 ... mid 80's to early 90's IIRC). I doubt that they would have been fitted with dual turbo's as standard. That's more likely to have been an after market mod and the vehicle was eventually scrapped with the turbo's still in place. :think:

This is turning into an interesting search.. Reading up on different motors that Toyota has to offer and sourcing them and prices is leading me in the direction of the 1UZ (Lexus V8). I am still convinced this is too much (if ever there is something like too much) power for my use.

The 5VZ-FE is not such a favored motor by some fitment centers as they produce little power standard. Reading up and looking for power curves had me look into a 3MZ-FE motor..It is a 3.3l V6 that was put into the camry's and lexus's. It puts out 168kW@4200rpm and 325Nm@3600rpm.. It has more power from less cc's, same or beter power curve and is based on a light weight aluminum block with iron sleeves.. Less weight with beter power delivery gets my closer to keeping the front suspension closer to standard (or what it is now).

It still leaves me with more space in the front to fit proper cooling, aircon, power steering and secondary battery.

I still need to price the motor but I will still be using the autobox and transfer case of the Prado to make the lux 'all we'll drive'.. :D

After completion this will be a lovely vehicle, if I can source the funding.

Willie, have you been able to find a supplier for the 3MZ? Cost? The reason most guys land up back at the 1UZ is the cost of the basic engine @ around 5K... but it's the rest of the conversion that costs serious money...

Mr_B, no I have not yet had a word with my supplier, but I think it will be safe assume it will be in the same price range as the 5VZ at around R15k. So yes it does make more sense to go for the cheaper more powerful alternative if you take into consideration that everything from the motor to the diffs will be changed in any case.

What was the fuel consumption figure of this Prado V6 powered SFA?

Mind if I hang around in this thread? Looking for conversion options to my '95 SFA and this sounds good because it sounds simple. I love the idea of pretty much keeping the drive train stock. Power on this beast looks as good as it's torque but I am seriously interested in the feul consumption figures.

The 5VZ is an excellent engine, only issue is that most(if not all) of Toyota's V6's(old and new tech) are pretty thirsty. Will probably be a little worse than a std. 22R, I'd guess around 5-6km/l in town and maybe 7-7.5km/l on the open road! The more power it puts out, the more fuel it will use! That's the honest truth!
