Diff Ratio change

Post by Darcor »

Gentlemen, please help. I want to change my Diff Ratio from 4.88 to 4.55, front and back of course...
I've built a Turbo Diesel into my '94 SFA and it runs very well. At 120km/h GPS speed with 33" tyres the motor revs at 3400rpm.
A little too high for optimal fuel consumption. I get about 8km/l with mixed town and freeway diving. If I drive through the gears, not revving over 3000rpm I get 9km/l. The motor produces 300NM of torque at 2400rpm...I had a BIG Intercooler custom built...with this torque I'm sure it will turn the 33" wheels easily with a Ratio reduction to 4.55 and save me some fuel.
I believe the SFA 2.8 diesel Hilux came std with 4.55 diff ratios. Apart from Toyota themselves, can these be sourced elsewhere?
Thanking you guys in advance...

The 4.55 diffs should do just fine ..... won't affect the lower gearing too much and the torque of that motor shouldn't battle to cope with obstacles. At 120km/h the 4.55 ratio should bring the revs down to about 3100 rpm.

You'd better grease up first if you have to get the replacement crown and pinions from the stealers. Might be a better option to put the word for a good 2nd hand set out to the scrap yards and even the g-box / diff guys.

Good luck! ;-)
When your road comes to an end ...... you need a HILUX!.

Thanks Andy, H&H in Wellington in the Cape wants R4500 each for 2nd hand set off a 2.8 Hilux. I'll go look at them to see what condition they're in.
