Luxter's new engine

Post by Hoppy »

As you know, Luxter's been out of action for a while, the 4y was sold (i shouldn't have), but the biggest problem this last three months was to choose what to replace it with, the list became longer and not shorter and included;
2.7I
4Y turbo
4Y supercharged
3sGTE
Prado 3.4 V6
Lexus 4.0 V8
Lexus 4.0 vvti
350 chev V8
Ford 2.5 tdi
Ford 3.0 tdi
We started dummy-fitting a few motors, my biggest problem was to get one that could move far enough into the firewall to get the balance right, the right one was chosen (Ford 3.0 tdi), but the oil pump and sump was in the way of my cross-over steering, and my mechanic, Willie, said he hoped it would not fit 'cause Luxter would only exept a Toyota engine.
So we fitted none of the above, it fits like a glove and it's a Toyota engine......

Ok, here goes; A few years ago i watched and recorded a program on Top Gear where they took a 10 year old vw golf diesel automatic with 55 kw, fitted it with a microfueler and fed it LP gas, Nitrous oxide and diesel. On a quarter mile it lost out by one car length to a Lambo! Being a Diesel mech and a bit of a performance freak i thought i must take on this challenge at some stage.
I did some research and this is used in various types of diesel drags tractor pulls etc. they say you gan get about three times the horsepower and torque at the push of a button, they even de tune it for caravan towing etc, the biggest challenge is to get the mixture spot on or you will send bits flying, for that reason i chose the 2.5 Ford motor because i have about 5 of them available for spares, but in the end my cross over steering systym sits in the way of the oil pump, wich can't be moved. So i took the only KZTE motor in my shop, it fitted like a glove and it's a Toyota!, the only problem is i have one spare block and one spare cranck only, so we must get it right by the second time!
I've got some of the bits together, so we will start playing in a few weeks, i will keep you posted on the progress!

It moved, first testdrive went well, needs more fuel (tuning) and even with the 35" tyres, the gearing is to short, need about 4.55 or 4.3 ratios.

The bell housing is off a 2.5 d4d 2x4 low rider, had to grind some gussets away to accomodate the bigger clutch.
To fit one in a SFA, you need to lower your diff ratios to 3.7, move the gearbox back about 40mm, and change the electronic pump to manual(if you don't have the complete harness, ECU, Key etc.).
The KZTE motor will break a 4Y box if you let it work hard in 5th gear.

Conversion done and tested.
Acceleration in town is a bit slower in first gear, about the same in second, but from third it pulls like a freight train.
On the open road, it cruises at 120 with less than half throtle and it doesn't slow down on the hills, the gearing is still a little short even with the 35" tyres.
The fuel consumption is 8.01 km/l not bad at all
The extra weight in front improved the handling on the open road and the engine is much less noisy than the 4Y, i can conect my radio again
The biggest test was the 4x4 challenge, and what a challenge! We won again and this time with a diesel!
