Re: Hilux Build
Way forward:
Cut out all the odd bits and bobs that needs reworking..
Fit a decent radiator, gearbox cooler and fans with the current motor as dummy..
Re-fabricate engine mounts and gearbox cross member..
Then ship the truck off to my place where I will slot the replacement motor into place with a pre-wired Toyota loom leaving only an adapter for the transfer case that is not part of the original Toyota fitting. Propshafts should be the correct length but might need adjusting.
Add a decent exhaust and test drive..
Sounds easy enough..

Re: Hilux Build
Oraait ek sien... Ja daai is n aansienlike lysie foute... Myne, not so much..
Ek dink jy moet jou trokkie reg maak dis altyd lekker om so iets te he...

Re: Hilux Build

Re: Hilux Build
Update:
Currently time is a big constraint and it might have opened a door to something new.. Enter the 3GR-FE 3.0l V6 by Toyota.
After the FJ has been treating me well the 1GR-FE has been teasing me as a great option for the Hilux, but at a purchase price of R48k without gearbox or ECU it is too steep for the build.
Then the smaller younger brother caught my eye.. A 3.0l V6 making around 160-170kW sounds like something the doctor ordered! At R28k it is still not cheap, but it is a new generation motor and with the smaller block (smaller than the 1UZ) I can add a viscous fan and decent radiator with air con and there is enough space for all under the hood..
My question: Who knows what about this motor.. What gearbox will fit on it, what ECU will run it.. What will it cost to fit this bad boy under my Hilux hood..
All input is appreciated..

Re: Hilux Build
One problem you have with fitting a short block V6 is that the gearbox needs to be moved forward atleast 60mm, you have to mod the X member, both props and the gearlevers ens up under the radio. The bell housing and flywheel has to be coustom made. The new generation VVTI's are variable and can be controlled with limited success.

Dankie dit was ja..ThysdJ wrote:Hello Willie

Hobby, the X member was botched in the previous build and requires replacement.. This frees me up to redo the prop shafts.. What I do not feel like doing is going the custom adapter route, this puts me off completely..Hoppy wrote:One problem you have with fitting a short block V6 is that the gearbox needs to be moved forward atleast 60mm, you have to mod the X member, both props and the gearlevers ens up under the radio. Seems I have found someone in the JHB area that has done a similar build with success and will leach some of his wisdom before deciding what I will do.. The UZ is just too much of a tight fit for my liking, but time will provide the answers.
Thank you for your input, it is appreciated.

Re: Hilux Build
Update: Some weekend and evening work saw me making slow progress and finally found someone else who had the time and space to take on the project. For now the 3GR-FE is out and the 1UZ-FE will do.. No standard ECU's was available and didn't want a limp V6 running some of its power compared to the V8 running full steam.

Hi Willie
