If you are going to go through the whole excercise of changing the engine then I am of the view that there are better options out there than the good old Ford Essex V6. A colleague of mine had a SFA with a 3lt V6 and I helped him maintain it shortly before he sold it. I was surprised to find that parts are becoming difficult to source for the engine. As an example we could not for the life of us find the correct new replacement rotor. You are probably better off going for the Ford/Mazda 2.5 turbo diesel.

By all accounts it marries well with the sfa, and a more than capable engine... and much lighter than 22R / V6

Agree with the above. Make no mistake, the older non-uprated Essex V6 was a fantastic motor in it's time (the uprated unit not so good). For decades it was the best bang for your buck conversion .... same fuel economy but a bit more power.

That extra power is nothing compared to the power improvement available from more modern motors and in many cases with better fuel consumption. Parts are definitely a problem, there are still some pirate parts available but the quality is generally poor.

So in essence, stay away from the Essex now. The Ford WL 2.5 diesel is certainly a good option and if you wanted to stay with petrol I would suggest the Toyota 5VZ 3.4 lit V6.

Just remember the re-sale value of your SFA drop with an engine in other than the standard one

Why not just keep the 22R then. There's a lot you're going to have to do to change it with the 2.4lit diesel and your only going to achieve a marginal fuel economy with less power on the open road. Just doesn't seem worth the effort to me unless the 22R is buggered and you have to replace / repair it. Even then I would sell the old 2.4 and put that money towards rebuilding the 22R.

P.S. if you're looking for the V6 sound then go with the 5VZ (3.4lit Prado motor) and fit a set of branches - should give an awesome sound.
