'99 4x4 DC rear suspension hanging
Hi there
My '99 4x4 DC Hilux's rear is hanging and I would like to know how I can get it leveled out. The front suspension was lifted with the torsion bars and and now it seems if thow the rear of the bakkie is hanging down. I do have a canopy on the rear and I do carry a lot of things with when going on a camping trip. Sometimes it looks if the leafsprings is straight when loaded.
Any help??
Werner

Hi Werner.
your best bet will be new suspension like Mikem ,OEM etc.
BUT I had the same problem with my 99.Hoppy than re-tensioned the leafs with his press and serviced the packs.I think it was in the region of R750 or something.I tow a boat often and after a trip through the kalahari fully loaded with RTT my van is still level.

Re: '99 4x4 DC rear suspension hanging
Werner,
If the blades are straight when unloaded, they are shot and need to be replaced.
Mine are straight when heavily loaded with gear. I am going to fit some air helper springs, I think they are Firestone make not sure. I can not fit Mikem or so because I do not want to lift the rear anymore. I tow a caravan and my drop plate for the towball is already very long. So when not towing caravan and only loading up for tent trips I will inflate the rear air helper spring to level the vehicle out again.

George
I have got the Monroe Gas Magnum shocks in the front and the rear. I have heard that they are also a good shock.
I also think it could be the leafs that is starting to become slack. I'll have to hear how much the guys here will ask me to retension them.
Simon
I don't like the air helpers. What happens if the one gets a puchture? I have heard some stories about them but I don't know if they are true.

There is a difference between re-shaping (in a press or beating) and re-tensioning (heat process). The first is a much better option than the latter. Do a search on "Re-tensioning" ... there's a lot to be said against it.
Not sure of cost nowadays, but OME would be about 8,5 to 9 k for the two rear leaf packs (fitted) and Mikem would be around 6 / 6,5k.

Werner,I have reshaped mine as Andy said and they put a extra blade in.Then the bakkie was fine untill I put my canopy and all gear up and it was hanging again. Then I made the shackels longer and it is fine for two years now.

Spot on ...R18500 all round is the quote I got a month ago.Mud Dog wrote:Not sure of cost nowadays, but OME would be about 8,5 to 9 k for the two rear leaf packs (fitted) and Mikem would be around 6 / 6,5k.
Not sure if OME's are worth that kind of money...my fronts are shot after 18mnths, currently trying to get warranty replacement.

Andy is right mine was also "re-shaped."Mud Dog wrote:There is a difference between re-shaping (in a press or beating) and re-tensioning (heat process). The first is a much better option than the latter. Do a search on "Re-tensioning" ... there's a lot to be said against it.

On the shock I will probably also go with Munroe's for my next set.Hoppy mentioned once that the best ride you get is with Monroes in the front and Gabriels in the back.IIRC.
I got a quote(Gabriels) the other day and i saw that the back shocks have two different part number for the left and the right.Did not know that.

Re: '99 4x4 DC rear suspension hanging
I don`t really want a temporary solution as I am camping alot and drive 4x4 atleast every second week.
I think I`ll have to save up for some new ones. Maybe OME or Ironman.
Do you guys know what the limit is on the lift with the torsion bars in front?

Check out Ironman's site...R3000 odd for the SFA front set, R13k for full set incl shocks.werner1 wrote: Maybe OME or Ironman .Do you guys know what the limit is on the lift with the torsion bars in front?
Torsion bar limit +- 75mm according to some experts; think someone here mentioned up to 100mm without hassles.
Edit: IFS kit R12750 or R14710 with foam cell shocks...Quote from site: "The complete IRONMAN suspension kit consists of 4 shock absorbers, 1 pair of torsion bars, 1 pair of leaf springs, a set of 4 u-bolts and a polyurethane bush kit for the rear springs.Kit contains either Nitro Gas or Foam Cell shock absorbers."

Will go to their website thanks. I have got the IFS.
If I remember correctly the front from ground to the underside of the fender is around 950mm or 980mm.
Will go and check to make sure.

Dankie Heinrich
Ek is ongelukkig in Nelspruit. As ek die vere gaan vervang gaan ek verseker greaseable shackles opsit ook.
Ek sal bietjie gaan rond shop hier en as ek nie reg kom nie sal ek hulle verseker dan bel.

Bietjie na hulle website gaan kyk. Ek is sold.
Ek gaan hulle gebruik saam 'n stel Monro Gas 4x4 Magnum skokbrekers.
