Breather for fuel tank on IFS

Post by xerxes »

Hey guys
I have a problem with a fuel tank
seems like the fuel tank valve/breather is not working properly as the tank makes a loud noise/bang from time to time
where is this breather located on the IFS and do i need to get the whole fuel tank out to replace the breather?
thanx

Hi Nick,

Welcome!

I can give you all the answers you need, but first you need to post a pic of your van  to be sure I don't give privileged info to tenderpreneurs or one-post-wonders! :shh:

Nick

The breather for our IFS bakkies is linked to a pipe coming out of the top of the tank. It then runs a short distance away and ends in a rubber grommet (AFAIR) into the side of one of the main chassis members. Look for someting that looks like an inline fuel filter (small white cylindrical shape). I can take pics tomorrow and post should you need, just shout! It should work like a one-way valve.

Found is drawing on TOYODIY.com - description number: 7701T

Hope this helps

Ok then, that much better!

Stand at the left doors, right where front and back doors meet. Put your arm under the chassis rail and feel against the inside of the rail.

About 3-400mm to the front of the rear door you will feel a pipe going into the chassis rail. That is what you are looking for. Pull it out, undo the hose clamp and pull the breather out.

The first time it may be quite hard to get it out of the grommet and hose clamp but just keep on pulling.

I remove it every time I fill up. Can do it in a few seconds now.

Good luck and please do give us some feedback!

thanks for all the feedback
ive followed that pipe, but it seems like it runs all the way into this box/bottle located in the enjin compartement (theres actually 2 pipes going into that box/bottle).
Then at the bottom of this box/bottle there is an outlet pipe that goes down and into the chassis. but on that outlet pipe theres no breather.

what could b the culprit?

Eish,

then I don't know~ All IFS that I have checked had the breather in the chassis rail.

The 2.7 does not have a normal "breather" it is a closed system for emmision control. There is a valve on the charcoal cannister in the engine bay that controls the "air flow" . The fuel fumes is contained and vented to the engine via this cannister and valve. This is also why the fuel tank is under slight pressure when driving, when you open the fuel cap you should be able to hear the pressure being released. (You are actually suppose to replace the fuel filter cap gasket every 60000 miles) Do a search for "evaporative emmisons control" or have a look on TOYODIY the SA HILUX's can be found using the RZN169 vehicle frame code.

Hi Theo
You can just see the fuel filter hiding behind the fuse box in the picture.
