I tried it with a cheap Midas one and it was crap.
Problem is you put the probe somewhere outside the vehicle
Under the vehicle or behind a body panel

If under the vehicle it pics up the heat from the tar and not real temp. If Behind body panel it gets "very" hot inside the car when sun shines on that panel, but if sun is on other side of the vehicle it is not that hot.

No matter where you put it, heat from road, body panels, etc influence it.

I am going to give it a go but need to find components. I am looking for a display unit that can take at least 2 temperatures, dash mount or similar.

My plan is to monitor the ambient temperature (nice to have) in the bumper somewhere and also the EGT.

Any ideas of where I can get an indicator (digital) and temperature probes?

The one I tried was something like R35.00 from midas (on special)
Has dual display. It has one probe to put outside. The interior temp probe is on the display unit. So one must also be careful not to install the display too high on the dashboard, otherwise when sun shines on the dash all of the sudden it gets very "hot" in the bakkie

I now have it in the garage and it seems rather accurate

I have one like that Pieter, and I put the "outside" probe inside my Engel and the display unit on the outside of the insulated cover. Now I can see how cold it is inside, and how warm it is outside the fridge..

PS My Engel is an old model, and has no temp display.. but it still works after all these years of hard use..

The ones that get factory fitted, normally have the probe in die front grille between the grille and the aircon radiator.

Thanx for that one, makes sense so the heat from body panel wont have much influence especially while driving.

Maybe I must try it again. I took it out because it was getting way too hot in the vehicle with that gauge.

This might work, but the supply is 12 volt AC and not DC.

I have had a thermometer from 'TFA Dosmann' in my truck for years now. Battery lasts about a year. Outside temperature sensor mounted in the grille of the car and the unit itself mounted next to the AC and fan controls seemed to give fairly accurate temperatures inside and out. Unfortunately I couldn't find a supplier for SA. Found mine at a shop in Windhoek selling mostly goods imported from Germany... The Midas ones should work too if installed as described, but the one I had did not even last a year.

Good luck.

Gernot what is the make of those on the photo, they look great, maybe I can find something on the internet. I also have one of those Midas cheapies, but they dont work well, when you have the probe next to the unit, then you get 2 different temperatures displayed, thats a sure give away that its not right. I'd love to find something descent to fit aswell.
Also looking to fit a seperate EGT gauge, anyone know a good make and supplier, prob will need some work done to fit its probe to the engine piping.

Philip, I bought mine a couple of years ago (and it is still working perfectly; replaced battery once!). Back then it was about R90 if I remember correctly  I guess they should not be more than R200 nowadays?

Ian, it's a TFA Dosman, I believe Pieter found a possible supplier:

From what I remember back in my student days, that shop sure had a lot gadgets and toys, if they don't have it, I don't know who would...

I will find out if the shop here in Windhoek has still got these units in stock and at what price. Will give some feedback next week.

I'm currently using a DS 1621 temp chip to log temp at home; hooked up to a RasPi on the I2C bus though...but not impossible to use a vehicle, as a matter of fact one could hook up more sensors than one could find places for....
