Cirrus Intercooler / Fuel Consumption / Selling KZTE

Post by morganharris »

Hey Guys

Hope you can help, im sitting with a decision making problem on my KZTE, whether to sell or Chip and Intercool.

I have rigged my bakkie with R90 000 extras for Hunting Safaris and the bakkie performs lekke in the veld, lifted in a hell of a lot. Problem is that with my driving style (80kph town driving and 130-140kph highway) im getting around 6km/l, i know the lift has a bit to do with this as well. and i was planning on doing a Cirrus Front Mount Intercooler and Dastek Chip.

1. If i Chip and Cool the bakkie and keep my current driving style, what do you think best and worst case my fuel consumption will go to?
2. I can also sell my bakkie and get a 2.5SRX and chip that to get similar power, but im not keen on spending moneys like R90 000 to rig that out as well.

Any advice would be great guys, thanks

Hi Morgan, you can also try a less restricting silencer box and wider exhaust, not sure how much you will gain in fuel efficiency, but would definitely chip and fit an IC. I get about 8km/l with SAC IC and chip and also have a heavy foot.

By reducing your speed to LEGAL limits you would also probably save around 15% of your fuel costs. 80km/hr in town is just not on, no matter how good a driver you might consider yourself, you are putting other people at risk.

I doubt you will get a worthwhile fuel saving (if any).
Given your current driving style you will take advantage of the additional power.

The best method to save fuel is to adapt your driving style.

No amount of chips and intercoolers will decrease the wind resistance at 140. The only way to increase fuel consumption is to keep it below 110. Wind resistance on a brick-like Hilux at 140 is almost double of what it is at 100.

Fitting the chip and IC will just double the wind resistance quicker..

drag increases with the SQUARE of the speed.

increasing from 100km/h to 141,5 km/h exactly DOUBLES the drag !

PS - coming back from Oysterbay in May it was the one stretch of 80km/h after the other. The few spots of 120km/h the traffic was too heavy and I doubt we ever exceeded 100km/h for more than a km or 2. clocked in over 10 km/liter on that stretch ! and at a mere 115km/h I dont get better than 8,5 km/liter !!

Hey guys

Took my bakkie in for a Dyno today. The guy says my Diesel Pump needs fixing, this is the problem for sluggishness and horrible fuel consumption.

I took a Pic of the Dyno screen, dont know how to read it, but the top arc graph reads 203 and the bottom 54. He says this is a significant decrease over a standard KZ and pump needs fixing.
He also sent me a quote for R11 500 for fix it.

I know nothing of these things, any advice, assistance or help would be appreciated.

Sounds expensive for a pump repair?

I was quoted R12500 to have my electronic diesel pump repaired, thats one of the reasons I opted for a mechanical pump. I got quotes from 5 different places all more or less the same. I also understand that it is not worth repairing the electronic pump as it does not last long and then has to be repaired again.

I have a completely redone pump which has never run. Take a photo of your pump and post it here and I will check it and if they are the same we can possibly make a deal or something if interesred.
