My KZTE DC 4x4
So finally after many years of searching saving and viewing many many bakkies the right KZTE came up.
I picked her up yesterday and man is it awesome. The van is super neat a pleasure to drive.
The day i saw her
She really is very neat and clean. will post more pics this weekend with my other toys
Few things that i will be doing this weekend.
1. Re wire the spots and setting them as one is hunting for UFO's and the other is checking for Moles
2. Fitting the front tow hitch
3. Adjust hand brake.
4. Dual battery system to be fitted
Few things that i will be sorting/Installing out over a period of time.
1. Speedo needle bounces alot so will fit a new cable.
2. Slight noise from the front sounds like it could be wheel bearing. Going to get that checked tuesday
3. Intercooler
4. Watermeth
5. EGT monitoring system
6. Lift kit
7. 31" Tyres
8. Roof top tent
9. Better bull bar
The list will grow but for now i am just enjoying her.
few things i am unsure of and would just like some input.
1. The bakkie does not smoke at all. When you start when you floor it on the highway there is no smoke at all. is this normal? The bakkie has a single box at the back on the exhaust with no cat from what i can see.
2. Revs. The bakkie pulls strong till about 3200 then it seems to be flat. I am a petrol man and this is all new to me so i am not sure if the van should pull strong till 4000rpm or to 3500rpm. (Im not trying to race her but just checking)
The previous owner never really drove the car it used to stand for months on end. I am being super gentle with her. Start her let her idle for a min then pull her out. No reving over 2000rpm till she is at opt Temp. I have only reved her twice now over 3000 to see if she pulls but she seems to fall flat just after. Im just a worry wart as i want to make sure all is right with her.
PS the van has FSH.
Thanks
Grant

Re: My KZTE DC 4x4
She looks nice
I founded that after about 3200-3500rpm it is passed it max torque so no use revving it further. In fifth at 3500rpm you are already at 140km/h IIRC
I got that on mine also.I think the ECU have something to do with it.My old pump was shot and still did not smoke. My new mechanical pump smoke just like me1. The bakkie does not smoke at all. When you start when you floor it on the highway there is no smoke at all. is this normal? The bakkie has a single box at the back on the exhaust with no cat from what i can see.

Re: My KZTE DC 4x4
Congrats! Just on point no 1. Try to keep revs not higher than 3000rpm, typically change gear on 2500rpm, my max torque and power is at 3rd gear 2800rpm after that you will start going flat. With no smoking it's a healthy engine and pump. Enjoy the torque rather than the power being new as a diesel head!

Re: My KZTE DC 4x4
Thanks for that 4x4Maniac yeah she feels healthy up till 3000rpm but I must say I really enjoy the torque she has.
As for the no smoke meaning healthy that is awesome.
One more question to add. Did these bakkies come with CATs or not. I think my exhaust has been changed

What a beaut, well done. If you love speed go petrol, diesel is more torque, I keep mine around 2500 rpm.

Re: My KZTE DC 4x4
Thanks Guys.
So small issue I hope. So did a trip from Scottburgh to durban and when I arrived in durban at the first robot all was fine. Pulled off changed to second and it grated.. thought ok its me cause the clutch is stiffer than the polo. Next robot pull off change and it grated..
Any ideas what it could be. My mind says synchros but I don't know hilux boxes. Give me a golf gear box and im ok.
Any advice would be appreciated

Re: My KZTE DC 4x4
So today I decided to install a aerial for the radio as it never had one.
Found the cable to the old one still there just it had been cut. So pulled that out and fitted the new aerial. Sadly it seems the radio fm tuner is fubar aka broken. So will take the radio in to my mates shop on tuesday to see if it can be repaired. If not will start the hunt for a new unit.
Pics below of myself installing. My father making sure I don't stuff it up. And my son supervising
This evening I pulled the one gas shock off the canopy as it was needing TLC
Before
All taped up
Sanded and hit with 8 coats of Matt black.
Will take better pictures in the morning but it looks much better. Will finish the otherside one off tomorrow.
Monday will be re wiring the spots.
Thanks for looking

Re: My KZTE DC 4x4
So today I pulled the spots off to re wire them as they were done very badly
Before wires
This didn't look good at all. So what I thought would be a quick repair turned out to be a full repair.
After
A before and After in one picture.
Complete
Then started to put the van back together and didnt get to take more pictures as we had to go do shopping for food.
These are a few pics I snapped while busy. The wires to the spots I am not done with yet as what I had in mind at the time now wont work. So will finish it up on the weekend.
Also while I had the front end stripped I checked to see if I could fit my front tow hitch I bought. But its not a straight fit. Going to need to modify a little to get it fitted. Will have a look later at that though.
Oh I did the airbox mod on the lux. Feels a little more peppy now. But think next is a snorkel and intercooler.
Does anyone have pictures of their intercooler installation. Ie where all the plumming is running?
Thanks
Grant

These guys used to have an intercooler kit:

Re: My KZTE DC 4x4
So the bakkie seems to be waking up now. Its feeling alot more peppy and alive.
When I picked her up it felt very tired and underpowered. But after my two nice long trips she is really feeling awake now.
Ive seen a few guys who mount a torch on the A pillar on the inside. This is a awesome idea. Anyone recommend any torches? I have priced the Mag light and they quite pricey anything else out there worth looking at?

Look for a "Cree" torch ... might also be under the name "UltraFire". AFAIK Cree make the led units for the LedLenser units. Pieter used to stock here on the shop (4X4 Direct), but not sure if he still does.

Re: My KZTE DC 4x4
So the last part of my goodies arrived from 4x4Direct. Must say their service is awesome. Had a small hicup with a piece being left out but
one e mail and all was sorted out. Such awesome service
So this weekend my organizer will be fitted...

Re: My KZTE DC 4x4
So I got busy this morning.
Installed the organiser - This thing is awesome
I used self tappers to fasten the rail on. I plan on carpeting behind it as it looks rather ugly.
Next I tackled the LEDs in the canopy.
I used a bonnet alarm switch to cut the negative. So as I open the door the light comes on and as soon as you close. Its off works like a charm
I ran my positive from the battery into the cab throught the rubber grommet under and into the canopy
I put a break in so when I remove the canopy I can disconnect the positive feed.
Fed the cable around the rubber to the roof.
Very happy with it and they super bright.
Thanks for looking
Sorry will take more pictures tomorrow and add them. These ones are just not working for me. They just wont rotate

Re: My KZTE DC 4x4
So this weekend has not been a great one.
I stripped the front end to fit the front tow hitch I bought some time back. A bit of modding but got it sorted. Down side is I clipped the radiator and now its leaking... so stripped that out and sending it in to be messured up for a replacement. Oh and the battery decided its time to retire along with the drivers side front tyre.
On the plus side the front tow hitch is in and looks good. Roof top tent will go on this Wednesday.
Will add a few pictures this week..
