LR Tank options for IFS d/c?
I'm thinking of getting a Long range fuel tank for my IFS d/c.
Not so much in favor of the ones that fits on top of the spare wheel and drops it by 50mm or so...
Which other options can I like to consider?
Thanks,
Jacques

Im not sure if there is any other option for the IFS bar having a tank in the bak.
if you need a tank, have a look here and give me a shout if you are interested.

Re: LR Tank options for IFS d/c?
Hi
There is a company (I believe in Oz?) that make a larger repacement main tank.
If I remember correctly the name was Longranger.
Website: http://www.thelongranger.com.au/hilux05 ... ltank.html
Takes 115 litres without strange pipes!
Looks like that maybe an answer!

The Longranger is a firm favorite with the Land Cruiser Club guys. I had a look at this one and like the fact that it sits in front of the rear axle.
However it only takes you to 115l from the OEM 75l - increase if 40l? Almost not worth the effort?
Thanks,
Jacques

Re: LR Tank options for IFS d/c?
Had Frontrunner tank fitted to my 2000 model 2007i 4x4 Dc in 2004. Was the best investment and improvement on my then bakkie. If you draw a line between the bottom end of the diff and furthest point on rear bumper/towbar you loose very little in height. When I did sandy tracks ( Botswana ) I removed the spare and put it on the roofrack. You will in any event battle to remove the spare under those conditions even with no extra tank . No jerry cans ets to sukkel with. Clean and easy.

Re: LR Tank options for IFS d/c?
Thanks Arno - definitely worth a consideration.
Problem is that I will probably need another RTT sooner or later (for kiddies). My second spare is already on the roofrack and means that I'll need to get a rear sparewheel carrier. A bit concerned with much more weight behind the rear axle (sparewheel carrier + 2 spares + LRT + 60l fuel) - adds a lot more stress to the chassis?
And I refuse to tow a trailer!!
I like the idea of a second OEM tank next to the existing one like the SFA guys fit.
But the rear silencer is in the way
What are the effects of removing it
Thanks,
Jacques

Re: LR Tank options for IFS d/c?
Most probably noise only but go to a reputable after-market exhaust builder ( TNT has a good reputation in the East Rand) and ask them to advise on options to reroute/reconfigure your exhaust system around the problem area. Also speak to Charles from 4fours (082 574 0228) and see if he cant help you with a custom tank for the cavity maybe.

Re: LR Tank options for IFS d/c?
Hi Jacques,
Have you had any success finding some one to do this solution of an extra tank in place of silencer?
Too the van in to get it tested yesterday and asked mac(oops mechanic) if removing the silencer would affect anything, and he replied NO.

Re: LR Tank options for IFS d/c?
I recently had a Front-runner installed by Cris from R&D. Yes, it drops it by a few mills but not by a huge amount. The spare wheel is now flush with the bottom of the towbar so not much clearance has been lost.

Jacques I have fitted a Farmers tank last week it take up some bin space but for what I use the KZ not a problem. It added a 130 l extra capacity now and I guess I can do over 1600 km when both filled up.Jacques KZ wrote:I'm thinking of getting a Long range fuel tank for my IFS d/c.

Het enige iemand al n Front Runner L/R tank laat instaleer in n IFS 2005 enkel kajuit bakkie.
ek wil dit doen, maar hoor daar is probleme met vol maak en dan die "gravity feed" na die oorspronlike tank.

Re: LR Tank options for IFS d/c?
I chatted to Chris about these problems when he installed mine in the D/C.
Apparently the trick is to get the Y connection to the existing main feeder pipe as high up as possible to avoid possible airlocks. On the D/C this isn't as easy as it sounds as space is very limited behind the rear cab so a mechanic with lots of patience and small hands is a neccesity.
I was also worried about the gravity feeder but the diameter of the feeder pipe to the main tank is so small that it doesn't pose a problem. The concern here is that if your main tank is running low on juice and you're climbing a mountain, the fuel will run over into the reserve tank and you will run out of fuel. I've tested it on a slope and it takes ages (hours) for the main tank to empty into the reserve. The moral of the story here is to make sure your tank is full when you go climbing mountains

Re: LR Tank options for IFS d/c?
Jacques,
I installed extra tanks in all of my previous Lux's, ALL on the chassis, under the body/passager seat.
(Parallel to the original, just re-routed the exhausts. IFS exhaust runs down the RH side.)
1990 2.2 SFA S/C - Gravity with 3-way tap inside
1997 2.8 TD SFA S/C - Extra electronic pump with switch
1994 2.4 LTD SFA D/C - Extra electronic pump with switch
(1998 3.0 KZTE Prado - Extra electronic pump with switch) also
2004 2.7 IFS D/C - Extra electronic pump with switch - CURRENT
All were custom made to fit. Earlier versions were all Stanless Steel, but the latest is Aluminium.
In time I found that the Stainless tanks eventually developed small cracks, where the aluminium has more "give"
All have been between 80 - 90 litres in capacity. All utilised the same (original) filling point.
Some had slight airlocks & some not. Appears that the breather hole on tank #2 is a critical aspect.
Lastly, KEEP your weight BETWEEN your wheels.
Good luck !

Sorry Jacques, been a while since I had some quiet "Joe" time.
In the pic you can (just) see the left LRT,
in the middle/right is the std tank (with std skid pan) &
on the right you can see the new exhaust routing (left of the rock slider).
Will try to take a few better pics when I remember.
