Footwell courtesy lights

Post by Die$eL »

Hi all,

I eventually got around to doing this. Took a long while to figure out how I was going to wire it up to have the lights come on when you open a door.
I eventually figured out that the door switch for the dome light controls the negative loop and not positive. :surrender:

So, here is what i did:
- got myself 2 LED strip lights (the motor quip ones for R90 each. Other were way more expensive)
- tapped into the negative feed from the passenger door switch to the dome light
- sourced + off my amp which sits under the passenger seat
- mounted one LED strip under the cubby and the other under the dash on the drivers side
- looped power from the first LED to the second

you can connect it off just one door switch. It still works when any of the doors is opened.

i think its not too bright or dim, just perfect!

This looks very neat!

Just one question, how does the dome light lens come off? My dome light lens is very tight and I do not want to break it.... Where do I apply pressure to get the lens to release?

They do clip in very tight and need a bit of "encouragement" to pop off. Try the end opposite the switch first, if that doesn't work, try the switch end.. ;-)

Ja, those foot-well lights are very handy at night, especially if you're travelling. I wired mine up to a separate toggle switch on the dash (centre console so that the passenger can get to it as well). I used the LED strips available from "The Shop" .... one has to use them in minimum lengths of 3 led's, but three per side is perfect.

Looking good, I did that over a year ago, but also added a strip under each front seat to light up the rear footwells as well, SWAMBO says its just cheesey and is dof, but she is a girl, what does she know, I think its awesome and comes in handy too.

I also added one to the Cubby hole and centre console compartment, those are linked to the dash lights so they only come on when the lights are on.

Just a couple of pics of my installation. The switch is below the cigarette lighter .... there is a punch-out to fit a switch, but mine already had a switch in there from the previous owner and conveniently enough it already had a "Lights" emblem on the switch ... not sure what it was used for before, but perfect for the foot-well lights.

The way I see it is that foot-well lights should be manually switched ..... to my mind, the point of these lights is to assist in the dark if you dropped something or if Swambo / your passenger wants to look for something in her / his travelling bag, whatever. If you have to open a door while driving .... :o: .... and activating the dome light for this purpose can be a bit distracting.

@Mud dog: I see your point.

I compared this to the lights that my Jeep Grand Cherokee had - they worked this way.

I imagine that they would because you would be opening the circuit. You could prevent ths by fitting a diode which only allows current flow in one direction.

nope they dont

they only come on when a door is opened

FYI, i fitted this to all 3 of my vehicles now. With the RunX they also come on when the boot is opened. As simple a mod it may be, it comes in Very handy and leaves you wondering, "why didnt i do this all along?"

The only bad part is that this light is white and the dome light is yellow. I need to place a big order from the 4x4 shop.
Fog light bulbs x 4
number plate lights x 6
dome lights x 3
dashboard cluster bulbs x ? (need to open it out and check first)

I also need to sort something for the light fitting in the canopy...
