Vigo - Intermittent electrical problems

Post by oxydog »

I recently had my brakes replaced by a reliable guy who's been working on all our vehicles for a couple of years. Since I got the Vigo back, though, my radio loses power (as in LCD screen goes blank and no sound) whenever I go over a speed bump, or change gears while driving uphill (must be the angle ?!?!). Yesterday, I was parked slightly uphill and when I tried to lock/unlock the doors using the remote on the key, nothing happened (apart from the LED on the key lighting up). At first I thought it was the battery, but the key is less that a year old, and after I drove to around and used it again, it was working.

I have 3 questions:
• Can these two problems be related? In other words, do they share a common live somewhere?
• Can this be related to someone working on the brakes? My gut feel is 'no, it's just a coincidence that it started immediately after the brake replacement'.
• This does not seem like a serious problem - probably a loose connection somewhere. Am I wrong in thinking this?

While neither of these two issues pose a serious problem (or do they?), we are leaving for Cape Town on the 14th of December and I'm not in the mood for driving in silence for 1400 km (I like my music too much), or teaching my 8 year old how to operate the door locks (kidding - he worked it out for himself). Please help me out here - I don't want to take it to the dealers for this.

Most of the time when working on a vehicle one is supposed to remove the earth from the battery. Maybe he forgot to tighten the terminal again after fitting it back onto the battery.

Could be, Cassie, but I'm not experiencing loss of power from the engine (4.0 V6), and when the central locking didn't work, I could still start her.

Cassie, so it turns out you were right. One night this week I arrived home after dark, and upon entering my driveway, got the same power down on my radio, but this time, I could see the lights dimming against the garage doors as well. Will have to tighten the connectors at the terminals. Thanks for the advice!

I have something similar. But its just on my central locking where it wont unlock but will lock but yesterday progressed to no lock or unlock. It started after I had a toyota approved cover over the alarm system in engine compartment and a plate over ecu behind cubby hole, fitted.

I will check all connections again tonight on batt. No radio or light dimming problems that I could notice!!

might have a loose connection under the dash as well - near where they worked ....

but agree that the battery/neutral is the prime suspect

 Seem to have it sorted, when they fitted the protector over the alarm system, they had to join the wires at the door control unit which is situated next to airvent above cubby hole. A wire had pulled back in the plug, and was making contact intermittently!! Sorted.

Ah, so the locking would only work when the fan was on 3? :lmao: Glad you found it!
