Camil or Mikem?

Hi Guys

Coming from a SFA im a bit shocked at howlow the D4D front nose is and so something needs to be done on an otherwise great bakkie.

Have been reading the threads and have decided on either camil from suspension which apparently will give me 60mm lift for Approx R4000 or Mikem which will give me 50mm for R2500.

Im not interested in extremes just want to stop hitting rocks with the bakkie in the veld!

Your comments on the choice?

Luke the lift specs given are when the suspension is new, no matter what you fit, OME, Kameel, Mikem... it will settle and later(hopefully much later) sag... conservatively rather think you are going to get a 30mm lift... and avoid disapointment(spelling )... there may be other options to lift the front of the new Hilux, just ask the guys, like a ball joint lift maybe, and the lift is permanent...

The best coils you can get for the D4D are the standard ones your car has come out with from the Toyota factory. The steel used and manufacturing of the spring is far far better than any other after market product.

Your best bet would be to replace your front shocks with Bilsteins (get them from Darrell at Mikem).

1. You keep you existing coils (and they can test them at Mikem for you if need be) which are the best out there.
2. The bilstein shock's strut mounting is adjustable so you can change the front height of you car at anytime without adding more hardware. They can but different setting on the shock for you that can allow you to do any lift increases you want in around 15mm increments. This will then allow you in future when you add extras to compensate for the sag, by using a higher setting on the bilsteins. You can get two bilsteins for the front for around the same price as what you were qouted.

I've already ordered my bilsteins from Darrell. It's about a two week wait as the parts are imported from Germany. But if you read anywhere on the web, Bilsteins are definately a cut above the rest!

Not sure I follow - Shocks don't give you lift they just absorb shock Unless you fit the camil ones which has a coil as well.

The mount is adjustable but this will only help you to set the lenght of the shock when and if required.

Am I missing something?

I agree with you that the shock itself cannot give you lift, however on the bilsteins (and i know some other American makes) the part of the shock where the bottom part of the coil rests on can be moved up and down the shock's shaft. With the bilsteins this is done with groves on the shock shaft which then house a type of steel cir-clip or 0-ring. On other American brands, the buttom coil strut sits on a thread that you can adjust with a spanner.

So theoretically no the shock in essence isn't giving you the lift, but practically on a coil over shock setup, the shock type can allow you to lift the vehice.....

All what happens is you set the pressure in the shock, this cause the shock to be harder and then it "lifts" the 4x4.

That is what I thought but it sounds like you can actually adjust the coil with this shock....

If one adjust the coil by adjusting the coil rest then you adjust the coil to be harder of softer, then the coil lift the 4x4. As mentioned earler there is also shocks that you adjust the pressure. Many years ago before the Air Springs you also had the shocks that you inflated the same as the Air Springs, yet this only improved the load capacity.

I just have to look at my fuel bill and my spirits are high enough! 11km/l and R6.70 per litre diesel... life is good!

What about adding a 10mm spacer on top of the coil? I have done it on my Fortuner due to the inter grated bumper/winch and on my d4d double cab. You get 35 - 40mm lift and no more hanging nose. They cost approx. R300.00(for a set) and R250.00 to fit. I have made 10 sets and have some 10mm spacers left, if you are interested

Hi Mark, would you by any chance have anymore of those 10mm spacers available? I think its a briliant idea to get the front end jacked up a bit as I have quite a bit of front sag due to the replacement bumper and winch.
