Camper Conversion
Hey there
I was wondering, does anybody know of anyone (or perhaps you have done it yourself) who has a 4x4 camper that they converted themself, or bought as it is?
 (you know, a caravan and 4x4 in one?)
Any answers would be appreciated.
Thanks
Gerrie

Re: Camper Conversion
Hi Gerrie and welcome to the Forum.
If I understand correct, you want to convert an existing 'van' into a camper 4x4? No trailer.
What most of the guys do is go the alu canopy route with roof top tent. This is a much cheaper option.

Re: Camper Conversion
Hi Gerrei,
Sure you going to enjoy this forum, and surely from these guy's chats we can learn alot still hey.
Ok, my brother and i started with a camper conversion on a isuzu single cab, so we will put step by step piccs on the forum as we go on with the job.
As OOOMS said, these campers are very expensive stuff.
After the costing on this one we will see exactly what we'll be able to build this stuff for and hopefully we'll get into a market for camper conversions.
Most guys go for alu-canopies and rooftop tents with awnings.
Enjoy

Re: Camper Conversion
Another option i looked at once was the CI Bakkiemate. You load it on the back of a bakkie and it can stand on its own too.

Yip.That is why i opted against it.Sho That looks heavy man.
But what I like is that it have this jack type feet that once you are at your spot and you jack it up and it will stand on its own.
One day when i am bigger(read winning the lotto) you guys can design a alu cab with a RTT that I can take off and it will stand on its own

If you are not fixated on dirt roads this camper van might be an option ...

Re: Camper Conversion
For dirt roads obviously the needs and practicality are often at odds. :?
That which is big enough is too bulky and heavy, etc.
The "Bakkie-mate" in the earlier post is about one of the best compromises - IF space is what you want, at the cost of weight, bulk size and permanent wind drag.
AHA has a very nice product.
Looking at the options available we opted to make our bed in the back of the bakkie, just using a "high line" canopy. I am currently busy raising the bed to make more packing space available. The whole idea of the build is on "practicality", ie when we stop EVERYTHING must be right "at hand". Down side of this is that the bakkie becoems a permanent camper - just too much of a job to unpack it to cart a fridge for the neighbour .... (although I can use my trailer to cart my own fridge)

Re: Camper Conversion
campers are great, look great offer great comfort, however have moved away from the idea, due to the following!!
what do you do when you need to go get bread milk, or just go for a game drive, that would entail tacking the house along for a ride!!
the one option would be to tow something behind, a beech buggy, a small suzuki jeep, a traylor with bikes or quads on it!!
one of the things we are looking at doing in the future is converting our traylor into a sleeping area once the quads have been offloaded, that way we have the quads and the 4x4 to get around!!
different strokes for different folks
not saying dont do it, just giving the info we came up with and the reason for moving away from the camper idea!!
still like campers, and still look every time we see one!!
for us just not practical, might work for some!!
good luck and enjoy!!
