Ruberizing - DIY
Is there a type of ruberizing one can buy and apply yourself? Even if it means that I have to buy a special spray gun.
I have this 3x4 metre little corrugated iron roof on the stairway which needs attention. I am rather sick of roof paint and stuff, they do not last here by da sea, so I decided that ruberizing will last almost forever.
The advantage of using it is then i can sommer also ruberize the bakkie's load bin and one will forever get some useful need for it in future.
So, do one need a special spray gun?
Is there a product one can buy at a paint shop?

I'm not sure about the rubberizing, but why don't you consider using water based stone chip?
It's hard wearing and will also be easier to clean should the pigeons decide to use that space as a turd parrade
Also the metal won't sweat under the stonechip.
Just my 2cw
Good luck Zane

Hi Zane,
please ellaborate. I want to rubberise the inside Rokorok to hide all the repair work
a water based product sounds like a much better option - is it thick enough?

Stone chip is 1stly cheap and like a paint it bonds and gives a solid/firm surface, it's the same stuff they use on the bottom of the doors and rails/sills.
You can apply it as thick as you wish and you can also thin it just with normal water if you want a smoother texture, all you need is the gun and that you get from Midas along with the stone chip. Gun R120 +-
Rubberizing I find after time and dents/cuts, lifts and then sweats underneath causing the metal to rust which you can't see untill too late. Also rubbs off leaving black marks on clothing ect after time as you can never get it spotlessly clean.
Also you are always able to touch up stone chip should you scratch/chip it which defi sells it for me.
I have 5mm thick rubberizing in my loadbin, and it still looks fairly decent for it's age, but underneath, its rusted through and from inspection you can see it happend/started between the rubber and not from underneath. Seen too many loadbins rusted through due to this.

Another option is Hammerite. It's stonechip and you get a smooth and hammered surface. You can apply it directly to rust as well.

Re: Ruberizing - DIY
Cassie, I wouldn't use Hammerite .... it's a hard wearing enamel that is chip resistant, but will still chip a lot easier than stone-chip which is specially formulated for automotive use. Hammerite is an excellent product for your wrought iron garden furniture and gates etc. One downfall with Hammerite is that you have to use their reducer / thinners which ain't cheap and neither is the paint. One used to be able to use acetone to thin it, and you still can as long as you use it all or don't put anything back into the tin, otherwise it will gel within a day or two. Using thinners will cause it to curdle almost immediately.
Besides Stone chip (very user friendly product by the way), there used to be a paint on / spray on rubberising .... can't remember the product name or if it's still available, one would have to ask around. Whatever you use, be certain that the surfaces are absolutely clean otherwise you will get peeling later as Zane said he has seen all too often. Just M2CW.

Re: Ruberizing - DIY
Pieter,
Ek het my Hilux se load bin met Plascon se bakkie & trailer coating geverf... Dit is 'n water basis stone chip produk. Myne is so amper n jaar al op my hilux en dit werk uitstekend!!!
Dop nie maklik af of iets nie.

Re: Ruberizing - DIY
I used Durabak rubberising.
My best advice is stay away from the stuff.
It came off in less than a year!!! and i have not caried a heavy load since applying the stuff.
I initially applied it to stop rust but the rust has spread under the so called rubberising.
Just my oppinion

Re: Ruberizing - DIY

So as jy my vra, sal ek die bak van joune net stonechip..

Pieter
Ek het n produk daar by my huis, het so paar jaar terug my vorige bakkie se bak daarmee geruberize het.

Durabak its the closest your going to get without having to pay R5000 for a proffesional job otherwise hammerite, stuff works like a charm,Also remember its how much effort you put into prep before painting, that determines how long the product lasts.
With each replacement of parts, a car slowly becomes Chinese.
