Toyota Condor 2400i 4x4 Mods.

Post by Johan Havenga »

Hi all.

Need to do some serious mods on the Condor as the trails get rougher.

I replaced the standard 205/70R15 Conti Worldcontacts with 215/75R15 BFG's

To address the lack of clearance I am looking at fitting Camil's in the front and Gabriel Safari's with Loadhog helpersprings at the back to level the vehicle.

Any comments on this setup?

Stage 2 will be the fitting of a Gearmax mechanical difflock on the rear.

Finally a Forfours Bash plate to protect the front. I was looking at their Condor Bullbar, but will just add extra weight to the nose!

Any comments and alternative suggestions?

Johan

# 1. Haal runningboards af.
# 2. Verwyder agterste stabiliser bar.
# 3. Camil shocks voor.
# 4. Verleng agterste shackles met 40mm
No jokes....

Vra my.

Hallo Johan / Leon

Ek sien Leon se Condor is definitief nie 'n "Mom's Taxi" nie. Jy moet maar verkoon as die "Jeep" manne so half bek-af op aandag staan as jy verby kom.
Doen my 'n groot guns asb.

:beg: :beg:

Johan

as you posted in English I'll reply in same.

For my 3000D I went to Mikem and Darryl/Ted fitted Bilstein gas shocks all round. At the front it is also the 'spring over' type but with a more substantial coil spring than some other makes. Huge improvement in every respect. At the rear I had an extra leaf added to the spring pack - cost was around R800 and made a big difference - car feels more firm, little sagging when loaded or towing etc. Btw the length of the Bilstein shocks are somewhat longer to accommodate the slight lift.

Gearmax rear difflock was included when I ordered the car new in 2004 and it was delivered like that from the dealer. I've had to use it often and without it would have had some problems. Such as in Kaokoland, pulling an offroad trailer up a loose rocky incline, and with cross-axle situations etc.

Now have Firestone Destination tyres (215/80R15C). With minor trimming and flattening of the weld seam at the rear of the front wheel arch there is no touching anywhere. Have tried to test with articulation (on garage ramp) and still no touching but have not been offroad with it. Tyres have static loaded radius of 237mm thus provide clearance equal / better than some 245 or 235 sizes. Perhaps due to the stiffer suspension I have not experienced any top heaviness or instability. To provide adequate space for the spare wheel I moved the towbar back by about 40mm (had a new, longer chassis plate/bracket made).

Other minor items such as additional 45 liter fuel tank, Charles' bash plates (Lynx). All looks pretty much standard.

As soos as we get onto gravel I always engage centre diff lock. It provides a sort of mechanical ABS.

Perhaps one day will take the car to SAC for gasflow etc. Would also like to have slightly wider track by using wheels with less positive offset. Might strain the wheel bearings more so would like to hear from those who did this whether they have had wheel bearing problems.
