Daytime Running lights - LED

I have been spending a lot of time on the road recently, yes I have done in 6 weeks just short of 7000 km's.

Something that I noticed and have been always for it is to have your lights on all the time when driving. However that leads to the lights reflector yellowing a bit prematurely, thus i have taken a liking since the launch of the LED lights that vehicles have been fitted with recently.

It does help to see a bit clearer the vehicle approaching and in my view it does aid to safer driving.

The question now is what is the view on these lights to the other members. I am contemplating to fit it to my vehicles front and back to aid vehicle safety. However it has to have a amber light function as well when driving in heavy rain its a lot more visible.

Anyone have any legal issues that needs to be kept in mind when looking into this?

I always drive with my headlights for the same reasons. Never had issues in about 10 years,

Good to see you back on the forum.

DRL's are a euro standard, all vehicles released now have to include them for visibility.

Don't think you would have an issue with the legal aspect, there are guidelines to mountung them though, they have to be within 30cm of the corner of the vehicle and cannot be higher than a meter IIRC.

Most spares places sell them now 8-)

Johan, the best part is that those LED running light take 90% less power than your headlights.. therefore more juice goes from the alternator into your batteries when you are on tour... Any means of making yourself more visible to other road users is a bonus in my books...

I will be looking for some LED driving lights too shortly...

Pieter has some nice 40" LED bars which might just do the trick Thys.

I think that is a bit overkill Steve..  melting the oncoming driver's retinas is not really good sportsmanship..

Pieter should maybe investigate DRL's and put them in his shop..

Oom Thys, I have a challenge with the quality of lights from Autostyle, 9/10 times they don't last as long as one would expect, or they leak. As a matter of fact a friend came past my house last night with a Opel bakkie, new headlights, these had an intergrated bank strip of day light running lights installed, out of about 12 LED's, 4 were already unserviceable. Head lights were installed last month. :shock2:

I have been looking at importing such lights for a while now.

Problem is I can buy the crap the spare shops sell at (my price) about R180 a set, or I can import very good quality which will cost me about R400 a set.
Selling a proper light at more than double the price is not easy if people think the going rate is the cheap set. That is why I do not have them yet because I do not want to sell a product that will only last a month and the good one I think is too expensive.

R400 is not bad for a higher quality product, personally would never look at any light or light fitting from Autostyle, don't know where they get THAT cheap LED's from :shock2:

I buy from them only known brands, i.e. Osram, Sony, Starsound etc.

Pieter bring in a few sets, I will buy a set and then test them. Even at the bigger price.. I am sure there are other guys that will also test them. Your price for high quality stuff will still be better than in the shops..

I replaced the park light globes on my car with a replacement LED bulb with 13 LED's, not quite the same but almost the same effect on mine as the park light bulb is in the same headlamp unit as the mains, cost was under R100 and no extra wiring needed - quick and easy. The lights are surprisingly bright.

Before and after. Not as bright as the genuine daytime running lights but they will have to do until I get around to installing the genuine item.

Pieter sal jy so iets kan kry ?

Ek moet eintlik weer begin kyk daarna.

Klink interressant ...

plug and play, of moet mens die bedrading insny ?
