Dis bietjie duur.

Ek dink ek ry verkeerd of iets.

Jy sal sien elders is daar 'n hele bespreking daaroor.

I am not going to even try and read through these three pages of afrikaanse, but what I would like to say is this;

If you want to buy a bakkie for R80 000. then spend R40 000. on it, do it make the vehicle what you want it to be, enjoy doing the mods, enjoy driving the vehicle on and off road, but please ask us for our comments before you just go out and spend the money on the various mods, you must know before hand what you want this bakkie to be able to do and what you want it to look like, it does not matter if you do not get the money that you spend on it back, if you can buy and then spend mega $$$$$$$$ on your vehicle, then money must not be a problem even if you loose it.

Concerning the locker that you want to fit for R4 800. odd, I would never go for that locker, it is too cheap, rather go and fit ARB air lockers.

Thus the bottom line is make sure you know what you want from this vehicle, you will end up spending more than R40 000.

you will find that R40 000. will not go far, just do it

Syron... askies dat jy nie ons Afrikaans so mooi vertsaan nie .. it becomes habit to just chatter away in the mother-tongue.
2-the-.:
Would you be so kind as to explain to me why a Gearmax at R4 800 [odd] is too cheap and a ARB at R13 000 is not too expensive?
How much is the ARB better than the Gearmax - and WHY is it so much more expensive than a local item?
Please - do tell
Regards

Okay try and picture or let your thoughts down this road

If this person ends up fitting 33 or 35" tyres
A marlin Crawler kit
Doing a 3 or 4" chassis lift
80mm body lift
Revolver shackles at the rear springs only
Larger more torque engine
Maybe some wheel spacers
Fitting heavy duty side shafts (Longfield)
Wants to use his vehicle to the extreme
Rock crawling
Cross axle articulations

The Gearmax diff locker will not stand up to this sort of abuse
Depends on which one he fits, normally they are an autolocker and thus once again depends if he fits one in front and one at the rear or only one up front, these auto lockers are no good if fitted in the front, they do not come on when required and prevent you from turning when you need them to be switched off, I have heard of these lockers not lasting, I have not heard of an ARB Locker that has given trouble and thus if he wants to fit The Gearmax then let him find out for himself

Simon/Mac,

I beg to differ: The Gearmax is vacuum operated and not an autolocker. It has been fitted as standard OE locker on most SA built bakkies, and is very strong and reliable. Maybe not for competition use, but I must still see one fail in weekend 4x4 driving.

The Lockrite is the auto locker. Cheaper than the Gearmax with the obvious short comings assotiated with full time lockers. I had one fitted to my previous 2.2 Hilux.

I paid R5,500 for my Gearmax, so the price of R4800 sounds cheap. Maybe excluding VAT?

Like I said, it depends which one he fits, yes you are correct the vacumn one does allow you to be able to switch it on and off as required which is also alright, but they do not last, but at the end of the day time will tell which one lasts longer, pity there is not a survey that tells us which ones last longer than others, however thank's for your input on this subject. Maybe some other person can shed their experience on this subject as well.

Hi,

I've got a Gearmax installed on my bakkie. Under circumstances it's the best that can be fitted to my bakkie as is. My only other option is Detroit auto lockers and I do not want to go there. To fit ARB I'll have to get an imported axle as I've got the local version.

I've I had a choice I would have fitted an ARB. The problem I've got with my Gearmax that it sometimes disengages at crucial times and then re-engages a second or two later. This cannot be good for the side shafts and will cause them to break eventually. m2cw

Have the same problem. To fit an ARB locker in the rear diff, I have to change the complete diff as I too have a local diff. If you want a locker that is not permanently engaged in the rear diff (advisable) one needs to look at the Gearmax diff, or another vacuum operated locker as mechanical lockers will stay permanently engaged. I have fitted a Detroit EZ Locker in the front which engage once the front hubs are locked, and know of a few SFA and IFS Hilux bakkies with this locker in the front. One of which has crawler gears and 33" tyres, and is usually driven quite hard on 4x4 outings, without any problems so far. Has been fitted for about 4 years. The prize was R3500 fitted. Is a bit of a difference between R13K and R3.5K.
