5 VF ZE into SFA

Post by zepplin »

Any advice on which bellhousing & clutch to use to mate a 5VF ZE to standard SFA 5 speed manual box?

Stef, how did you guess? It's early days yet but if I do decide to go with the 5VZ FE my 22R EFI will be offered here as a complete motor incl the management. Still no answers on the bellhouising but not in a rush.

You confusing me Steve, the 5VZ was the older 3.4 V6 Prado engine, it's non-VVTi.

The present Prado uses 1GR... which is a 4L V6 with dual VVTi. The closest GR engine to the 5VZ is the 2GR 3.5L V6, but they were never used in the Prado.

The only other Toyota VVTi V6 series were the MZ's... the 3MZ is a 3.3L and again was never used in the Prado range.

:mocking: :mocking: Just common sense, 22R's are easy to come by but the EFi part not, sell them as a combo & you get rid of the engine quick quick.

I'm open to correction here, but IIRC the 5 VZ (3.4 lit.) is a straight bolt onto the SFA bell-housing, but there has to be some work done to the fly-wheel / spigot bearing. Alternately you use the 5 VZ bell-housing and clutch as a straight bolt onto the SFA gearbox.

The 3 VZ (3 lit.) was probably a better option for the SFA ... not as thirsty and not so much strain on the gearbox / diffs.

Yip, if you can find a rear wheel drive one... remember the 3VZ from the Camry is not the right configuration for rear wheel drive! But the 5VZ's are all the right ones... still in terms of power vs. cost the Lexus V8 is still the best!

I still like Spartan's 2JZ ; Lexus bell housing from the stealers and it's a straight bolt on to SFA gearbox
Looks neater than the V8, in terms of how it fits in the the engine bay...

By no means an expert, get my info here :blushing:

Does anyone in Cape Town have a spare SFA gearbox (with bellhousing) to lend me to measure up for a custom bellhousing for a 5VZ FE conversion?

Hoppy tells me that to do this conversion the gearbox needs to be moved forward but I'm thinking of having a flywheel made so as to not have to move the box.

I have my flack jacket on so am ready for the comments.

They're still pricey - around 16K. The other option is the 1MZ FE but would need a lot more engineering to get it in. It's an is all aluminium so will be much lighter too - 6K.
