Naas I think you are getting vibration on the centre bearing in first gear. There are guys fitting a solid prop to get away from the centre bearing vibration and it works well.

Gunta I was just thinking of that today. Great minds think alike lol. Even if the centre bearing is fine it ma be to weak for the v8 torque in first. I think toyota moved away from the straight one to gain better clearance under the belly and to the rear. This may be an option. My 84 stout is still straight from the transfer. This should have a better angle on the diff with my lift. But the angle on the transfer side will increase.

What do tou think of improving the centre bearing to a more heavey duty one from a cruiser or something??

IMHO - Get a genuine part and balance all together... before then I replaced centre bearings almost every 10 thousand kms...

Sounds sensable. I know the one I have on there is a cheap aftermarket one I think. Also saw on the weekend the universal nuckles were not aligned right criss cross as they should be. All these small things add to the issue I think.

Thanks for the advise. What about centre bearing being 100% straight with box when looking from behind or rear of bakkie?

 If they were out of phase then definately it will cause vibrations etc. The propshaft Co must have slipped up

Naas you can also have it modified to take a double cardan joint which will actualy work better and put less strain on the bearing at the back of the gearbox. I used the original centre bearing from toyota but it still lasted only about 40k km. I would definitely look at doing the mod.

Theo. spoke with Mark late this afternoon. He was at the funural today so could not speak. And is going to the other tomorrow. Not good times. He did mention you have the latest spitronics. Venus if i recall. He also asked to mention that the cowling is in or back from powdercoating. Can not remember sry. He will be back to normal thursday, but his guys are plowing on.

Mine will hopefully be back from aircon tomorrow afternoon. Then he can tacle the other stuff. Hoping to get it friday late or sat early.

Here is the longer prop that I received back today. Note the double joint, no centre bearing. Please note this prop is in for the second time. Do not get a second hand double joint(one with too much wear), the Lexus will tear it apart due to the power it has. This one only saw 4000km.

yeah, expensive lesson as it trashed the 'box

I was driving back from the first painter that had my truck, it was just a rolling shell and it had been pushed into 4WD H and I didn't check. I was just too hacked off about what they did to my truck.

I pulled out from behind a truck to overtake and floored her and then "BANG" - one dead 'Lux

Oh well, as they say, "You live and learn"

Eish, thats bad, was the hubs locked?? Otherwise it should not brake it as its basically free wheeling then

Toyota Bakkie Spares in PTA, used front prop, R1200. N1 4x4, new aftermarket prop, R 3780 excl Vat

But you guys say for the lexus rear used is not good, what if you recon it at a propshaft place? And how strong is this aftermarket one from N1? I dont know

Ok spoke to a friend of mine with a normal 1UZ and 4 speed auto with 33" wheels. His also has the prop straight from the transfer to the diff. he does not have the double cardon, but he had to angle his diff to change the angle a little. It was running fine, but the propshaft guys said he may pickup issues with the universals at that angle.

So I guys the straight prop is the way to go to sort out the shudder in 1st.

Rick, must say that prop doest look like it ever had grease..  It will brake then.

So the aircon guys are busy, found a leak in the condensor so they are taking it out to fix, will be done by tomorrow afternoon. By accident we spoke, he saw the LED light bars on my bakkie, and got my number off the website sticker on my van, so he called and said he wanted lights like on this one Hilux he is busy with doing aircon...I was laughing, told him its my bakkie.

I imported the lights, shhhh :shh: :shh: Dont tell Piet

Then Mark will do the fan fix, and we are going to space the centre bearing down first to see if when we change the angles, it doesnt solve the problem of shudder, from there I will do a straight prop if needed. Only Friday to sort these things, so we will carry on next week. Want it for the weekend again :boss:

Monday Im gonna try and sort the police clearance so long, so I can get the papers moving and sorted, and then back to Mark, or maybe to Lextreme first for the Rev Counter, I wanna see what revs im doing in what gear, and see if it shifts all the way to 5th. Last weekend I tried to count it, but with tyre noise and wind etc, I cant hear. Sometimes I counted 5, some only 4, so I dont know. Funny.

Getting there!!

Theo, saw Olice quickly today, looks very nice and basically done.

Its near my friend.

My aircon is done, Mark got it back this afternoon, and is fixing the noisy fans so I can only hear V8 this weekend.

Seems like the one leak is coming from the transfercase, so it will have to come out sometime, the other leak close to the engine we did not speak about, But I suspect its the rear cranck seal on the engine, or the seal on the front of the gearbox. But seems like engine oil to me, so must be the engine.

lets see.

That was the agreement yes. But the seal could have failed for many reasons. If its that seal. May be the gearbox seal.

I will take my camera and take footage if it starts. But the nice sound is when you drive it. Not rev it lol.

I just cut and welded my old exhaust onto the new one, so it seems OK for now but I think your zorst will be more appropriate

Thanks for the Toyota Bakkie spares contact, Barry from Ultimate also has a few for the same price so it seems I have a few choices.
I still need to have it retubed and lengthened because when I did my body lift I lifted the box and engine the same amount, coupled to the fact that I moved the axle forward by 35mm at the same time.

Have fun with Luxi this weekend

Google is your friend!

Just a question-with an engine conversion does the "converter" not sort out these niggles as well or is this your problem?

I could never understand the sceptisism of some of the members with regards to "do the conversion" or not. I am starting to get an appreciation for the viewpoint "don't do it". At the same time I also believe that if you throw enough money (and time) to sort out the small things you will get there

Good luck

Lol. Hugo I was always for dont do it. And still am if you are still smiling driving your van. I took the decision knowing when you start to modify something. Its a chain reaction and never ends. Although frustrating at times, yes money and time will get it right. And I will probably not sleep until it is right.

Would I do it all over again?.......

Naas people will learn from your mistakes. Unfortunately for you this has not been done yet so someone has to be the guinea pig. I had the same issues with the 7mge conversion when I did it, now I know all the issues and how to sort the niggles out. School fees are expensive and if you dont learn varsity fees are even more costly. When it runs properly you will appreciate all your hard work even more. Hang in there the finish line is close.

hugo , we will sort these problems out , naas wanted the bakkie for the weekend and we only got luxi back on thursday afternoon , and naas picked up friday afternoon , unfortunately i am not a 24hr shop as some people seem to think - i had calls even this morning at 7 , but we do put long hours in and work most weekends but this i can only put down to the good bunch of guys i have and yes sometimes mistakes do happen but i never said im perfect but i will stand behind my work and sort any issues out , this is why we always have repeat customers and still have guys popping in just to say hi , so next week we can sort the driveshaft out ( but with the 5 speed the transfer sits further back than normal so it may have influenced something but we will have to check , 1 option is to have the centre bearing housing solid vulcanised casted to eliminate the wobble as the shaft takes the torque up when pulling away ) and fit all the covers etc back , centre console , leak on transfer will be sorted , engine leak i have a feeling is the sump as i asked my guys to remove it as they used the wrong sealer , maybe when putting it back there was an issue , but it did not leak before . as for crankseal they all get replaced and i source them from toyota as they are actually cheaper than gemini. i have a friend who is parts manager and we get good discount.
right in the beginning i did tell naas that we have not done the 5 speed and original ecu before on the vvt. so yes this was a learning curve for both of us and yes naas has been very instrumental and helpfull with finding info etc ,
and make no mistake my quoted price is my quoted price so its not going to cost more at the end of the day , i stand by my quotes no hidden stuff.
would i use the original ecu again on the vvt - no way to much drama with it and to much stuff to go wrong, with the spitronics on the vvt motor and the 4 speed box you wont have an issue , my point is the last gear is identical , but with the 4 sp you wont be hunting up and down the box as much as the 5 speed as the gears are more spaced , there is more than enough power in the motor for the 4 speed , and even if it does improve consumption 1 or 2% its not a train smash.

Did some research on the Rev counter, and came across a circuit the guys use the fix the rev counter issue

How it works is, the newer engines give a 5-6.5 V Square wave frequency to work the tacho, my old Hilux tacho works on a +12V Spike frequency, so it doesn’t work with the VVTi V8 output.

What the circuit does is it takes the 12V supply from the ignition through a relay coil and gives a high voltage spike with the same frequency from the Square wave input. Bought the components yesterday, 2 sets, cost me not even R50. Built it and its works 10000%. So I fixed my rev counter for Basically R20 and an hours work max.

Here is the circuit if anybody else wants to build it, or have the same issue.

lol, ek dink dit sal fine wees. Weet netnie hoe dit klink as hy ry nie. Ma Mark het my gewys, jy kan groter maar letterlik 4 of 5 cm langer bokse as wat nou da op is, so behoort nie eintlik n verkil te maak nie. mieskien ander bokse, selle size, maar meer restrictions binne om die klank af te bring.

Ma ek dink ry hom eers so, en change ma self dalk later sou dit jou pla, ma ek dink hy klink nogal mean, pas by die kar.

Dis dam n mooi cruizer daai hoor. Lat weet as hy dalk in die mark is later, ek soek eerste opsie lol

Johann, ek hoor jou lol

Mark was baie nice in daai sin, moet se.

Sounds good! Good luck and hope all is well Theo

I have been so busy at work, Luxi had to take a back seat. My rev counter mod was short lived, pressure washed Luxi last Thursday and then it was dead again, found the relay popped. Dont think its water though, relay was small so think it could not handle the spikes.

Had to take all my nice heatshrink and all off  , and replaced temporarely with a bigger Relay. still working so far.

Lextreme was busy so its booked for Monday the 20th, taking it in on Saturday to sort the shifting and all. I kempt to their advise not driving it at all. But is hard!!! Just starting it and charging battery every now and then.

This what Luxi looks like after 3L of Prepsol and pressure wash and some ralley no hands tyre polish :boss:
