Hi All,

I am in the process of fitting a 4AGE with a hilux gearbox and transfer case.

My snags thus far is the gearbox was shipped with no gear levers(This seems to be common practice to try milk you.).
Where can I get gear levers for this beast of a gearbox and T-case?
Are there other models that would fit the gearbox?
I was told it is from a 2.2 or 2.4.

Thanks

5 speed gearbox in a sort wheelbase :eh:
the litlle experiance i have is that the rear prop shaft tends to be to short and thus the angles are a pain in the Behind...
I would rather get a box that is somewhat shorter... may be a 4 speed hilux box

I have cleaned up and put together both the tranfer case and the gearbox levers and fitted them.
The transfer case moves smoothly through the gears. The gear gearbox on the other hand does not.
Is there a safety lock or specific way of fitting the lever? my sj box moves without an issue. Or have I been sold a bust gearbox?
I have not installed the gearbox yet.

Hi Stephen,
I also baught a gearbox some time ago. The owner assured me that everything was in good condition. I decided to open the gearbox to check the bearings and gears.
When I removed the front cover I found that the input shaft bearing collapsed and dropped into the gearbox! Lucky for me no major damage occured. I purchased new bearings and clips for R1500 and rebuild the box.

I think it's a good idea to open and check major components before installing them, it might just save you al lot of time and money.

If for some reason, someone put the gearbox down on it's bell housing standing upright, the reverse idler will select by it's own weight, the interlock pins will engage, causing all the other gears to jam.
Remove the reverse light swittch, (it is located on the front gearbox housing towards the rear on the driver's side), stick a screwdriver in there and move the reverse idler back.

Thank you gents. I shall have a look at both options tonight. I hope its the reverse idler issue.

Thanks

i moved the reverse idler back in place and now the lever moves back and forward somewhat easy. Still not eager to move into other gears. I may have to open this beast up to have a look whats giving me a hard time.

Thanks

Make sure that the gear lever tower is the right way forward, if the box is in nutral, the gear lever must be directly above the selector hole, if not, remove the bayonet fitting around the gear lever ball and turn it 180 deg.

Hi,

How do I identify what model and year the hilux gearbox I have?
I have searched all over for markings and info on trying to identify.
All I came back with was hilux G52 or G53.
From what I have been told. Its from a 2.4 L petrol somewhere around >1996.

I am looking at either doing a concentric hydrolic clutch or standard hydrolic or no hydropics at all.
I was also told that the hilux gearbox and Cressida splines are the same. As I can't find any markings on the gearbox I cannot confirm until I get thrust bearing.

Thanks
