7MGE stall's ever so often....

Post by Kaspaas »

So, I've been noticing Kapaas does not idle as smooth as he used to.
Idle speed varies like an old tuned V8, up and down - up and down when cold.

If I don't help with the right foot he'd just stall, now even when on temperature he'd ever so often just stall in traffic.
Always on de-acceleration, but not always or on everyday. (boggles my mind)

Anyway, changed the inline fuel filter.
Checked the petrol pump, but to no avail.

Still not idling smoothly when cold and still the stall problem.

For me it looks and feels like fuel starvation, also when I plant my right foot there would be a short surge and then pull away.

What do the clever guys say, is my gut feeling right --- its not electronic but fuel starvation?

**Another thing, there is a aluminium sleeve next to the engine. about the size of a aerosol spray can where the fuel line from the tank connect with a banjo bolt. Is that a strainer or filter? Tried going through the owners manual but could not identify it.

Cheers

Could be a sticky ICV; carb cleaner works, but wash it out with petrol afterwards as well.

Not sure what ECU you're running, but on the Dictator there's a response time that if too short it will cause the engine rpm to hunt up/down. But if you haven't fiddled with it then it has to be something else

I think Cobus is running the OEM management Stef so setting the response parameters will be difficult.

Dankie manne,

Got it, I'll check/clean that and see if there's any difference.

Haboob, I doubt it's the head gasket.
I have the High performance Cometic(Stainless steel) 7MGTE gasket with the ARP studs and torqued to higher NM.

Can anybody help with the Aluminium sleeve "spay can" with the banjo bolts?

Can it be the ICV when I accelerate hard and it surges?

I'm guessing it's an old style in-line HP fuel filter.

I had a read through the Manual that Gunta send me, and it looks like I can test the ISC Valve (Idle Speed Control) with an Ohm meter.

Very strangely I need to drain the coolant to remove this valve, but I guess it uses the coolant temperature to determine the idle speed?

Luckily I have an extra one if this one is faulty.

Oom Z, that "in line HP filter" is it reusable? meaning can you clean it? ( or is replacing the only option?)

The ISC/ICV valve will certainly use water temp to work properly. The colder the motor, the more 'help' it needs.

Those filters are not that expensive and only need changing every 50k kms so I'd just replace it. Any HP inline filter will do the trick - it doesn't have to be identical so shop around.

Morning Gents,

So I've been trying to sort out this stutter that Kaspaas has.

I first cleaned the original ISC valve, was fine for a few trips but not 100%
So replaced the ISC valve with a extra one I have, but still Kaspaas does the same.

With the initial start-up its fine, but as the engine gets warmer it stalls every time.
Sometimes he'll idle and sometimes stall as soon as I decelerate.

When I put pedal to the floor, there is a stutter and then he'll pull away.
On the internet there is ALOT of fault finding and remedies on 7M's , but the way they explain there stall and stutter differs from mine.

I'm convinced its something electrical or a vacuum hose.
I have a constant engine temperature and pressure.

And its never the same, sometimes it will idle very smooth and the next time fluctuate from 2000 to 500 to 2000 to 500.

Any ideas were I can start to look?

Dead plugs (how to I test it?)
Blocked fuel injection (how do I test it??)
Faulty pressure pump? (Can I test it? or just replace?)

Thanks in advance.
Ciao

Morning Guys.

This morning, I determined that with start-up - till on temperature the is no stalling or stuttering.
With normal acceleration, and cruising speed --> nothing.
As soon as I floor it, or take my foot of the pedal and depress the clutch the rev's will drop gradeulally and nearly stall before firing up again. and the fluctuate up and down.

I'm starting to think it could be my fuel pump?
Any inputs?

Hi Kobus,

3 things I can think of... the vacuum pipe from the intake manifold to the EMU, check that it's not snagged, perished, cracked somewhere, and that it's not leaking behind the EMU where it connects.

Another potential problem can be a poor earth on the injector circuit. Check that the pins in the connector plugins haven't been pushed back causing a poor connection. On Bolt I also had an issue where the magnetic pickup in the distributor shifted slightly causing a loss of pulse at low revs, also intermittent in nature, but also acted up at the most inopportune moment... like peak traffic at a busy intersection. Make sure the sensor is clean and properly aligned.

I am just clutching at straws here but once you've tried all the above, give the throttle body a clean or possibly replace to see if it makes a difference. It could be a calumniation of a variety of things.
With each replacement of parts, a car slowly becomes Chinese.

LOL, replace? #totallyrebuilt7MGE2013

Kaspaas is going to Hoppy in a few months time, needs some attention on the front diff and brakes.

BUT yesterday returning home after work, nothing wrong. Like not a stutter, no surge, nothing!!
This morning the same, I wiggled so many connections yesterday that I don't know where the problem could have been....

Temperature dependant maybe ?

once had a sticky automatic choke. But that grew progressively worse.

normally only electronics that are THIS eratic ...

have you checked the condition of the spark plug leads ? Let it idle in a DARK garage ...old leads puts up a nice lighting show ...

Swartvark had exactly those symtoms when his fuel pump was packing up. Try doing a 4x4 route... idling along in LR.....extremely frustrating, as it stalls at the worst possible places. :frustrated:

So my bet would be Fuel Pump, let's see what Hoppy finds.

I hope you have managed to sort out the issue this time.

In an earlier post you indicated that it is fine when you are driving normally but once you have floored it the symptoms appear. The fuel pressure regulator on the fuel rail is connected to the inlet manifold (sometimes not directly) with a vacuum tube. As the vacuum in the manifold increases, due to large throttle openings, the fuel pressure valve is "opened" increasing the pressure in the rail allowing for more fuel to be available under heavy demand. It could be that the fuel pressure regulator is sticky or that the vacuum hose circuit to the manifold is perished/blocked.

I would check that also.

Well you guys will not believe.............

Thanks to François from 4xLUX, the problem was identified as a cracked pickup inside the distributor that allowed oil from the top to seep through a seal, up the spindle into the distributor.
Disrupting the spark basically.

On the 7m the pickup is made from a type of Bakelite, lucky I had a spare one as you are not able to source this part new anymore.
Francois married the two pickups, and viola, everything solved!

Thanks for everything Francois, Kaspaas pulls, stop and idles like never before!
