The reason for the subject is this, the hilux i have found has been been modified for one reason or anouther and the current owner has replaced the toyota engine with a Nissan 2.8D i am looking for some form of advice on this engine in terms or quality and reliability... Feel free 2 email ur responses 2 rassiezim@gmail.com... I would really appreciate a bit of help in the right direction.....

Re: Nissan 2.8D???????????????
The Nissan RD28(belt) or LD28(chain) were used in a few conversions some years ago, the newest of those motors were produced about 15 years ago.
They were fairly economical, smooth high revving 6cyl non turbo diesels, but they lacked torque.
They were never used in SA, so parts are a big problem.
The price must be realy low to consider.

Re: Nissan 2.8D???????????????
It's a 6cyl, so it will be more powerfull, it's reliability and parts availability that's an issue.

If the mouter is still ok 50K doesn't sound too bad, but remember, with the recession you could push someone with a similar bakkie with a 4Y or 22R and all the extras to take 50K I think. And in the long run the all-genuine Toy will keep its value and probably grow again in terms of real value. With a alien motor, even though it's in good nick, you'll always struggle to get rid of it and putting another motor in will cost you another 50K. M2cw

Re: Nissan 2.8D???????????????
It is probably the RD28 truck engine.
Cheap, plenty around, spares easy to find.
Straight 6 engine.
Came in various models: 12 valve, 18 valve, turbo and non-turbo.
If your mate has the RD28 N/A, then it would push out around 100 PS (73.5 kW; 98.6 bhp) @ 4800rpm
18.0 kg·m (177 N·m; 130 lb·ft) @ 2400rpm.
Dunno how that compares to the Toy 2.8D.
This is/was also a favourite conversion for the Land Rover Series vehicles, as it revs fairly well for the 4.7:1 diff ratios.
This is probably why he used this motor in the Lux with the 4.88 diffs.
No turbo to go wrong, a machanical fuel pump, and no electronics. Good basic engine.
Other truck engine to use is the FD35T, which is a straight-4 turbo diesel with no electronics (check it out here:

Thanks for the confirmation Allan.
Rance, Absa is a much bigger problem than the Nissan engine in the Lux. We must change banks fast :!:
