Great stuff! Keep us posted of your activities .... I'd also like to know more about the dual X-fer cases.

Hey Philip! Welcome dude, I spent long hours on pirate4x4.com drooling over the crawling Hiluxes there. We need some 22RE EFI intake manifolds here in SA. Send on as many as you can lay your hands on..

There are some freeware re-sizing tools available (there's a link here somewhere to one). Re-size them yourself and upload direct off your drive.

Philip, I dont personally need the 22RE manifolds but there are a few other guys (Toyx4 etc) on the forum that would bend your arm for them and they could explain exactly what they need. I might ask you for some other stuff, but we'll cross that bridge when we get to it...rock solid wrote:i can get my hands on alot of 22re intake manifolds, how compleate do u need them?

Re: rock crawling toyotas
I really enjoy the 7MGE, it gives ample power for and is super reliable so far. It makes the Hilux much more responsive on the road as well. in South Africa we are not as spoilt for choice as you guys inthe US. Until about 10 years ago we could only choose between 4Y and 22R and 2.8 diesel motors in our 4x4 Hiluxes. We had to make do with what we could lay our hands on... Nowadays things have changed though, and more and more high performance motors are available.

Re: rock crawling toyotas
The humble 4Y is a 2.2L gasonline donkey in std format... good for about 68kw and 160nm torque... which is honestly far too little power of the heavy chassis+body+running gear of the SFA/4Runner... even the 22R 2.4L is underpowered... to get a little more out these straight 4's we fuel inject them, fit a stage 1 performance cam, freeflow exhaust and do a cold air induction mod... that raises the output to 80 to 90kw(mod/tuning dependant) and around 200nm torque... again it's not major power, but it's enough to get the hilux going much better...
The 2.4 22R intake manifold are extremely scares in SA and many guys would love to EFi there 2.4s... hence why we ask if you could get the intakes in USA...
The guys with more finance available do the following engine conversion here is SA(from the 2.2 and 2.4):
Toyota engines:
- 2.7i 3RZ
- 7MGE / GTE... straight 6 ... more so the non turbo version
- 2JZ... new generation straight 6... with/without VVT... Spartans fav...
- 5VZ... 3.4 V6... this engine was only available in the local Prado
- Lexus V8... a lovely engine... but in SA this is an expensive option... with lots of power!
Other engines:
- Ford V6 3L... not that popular anymore...
- Ford 302 V8... Ewald did this conversion recently
- Chev 350 V8...
- Mazda 2.5 turbo diesel... mainly for the guys interested in overlanding... where fuel consumption is a major priority

Re: rock crawling toyotas
Phillip,
I've just finished a EFI conversion on my 22R. The intake I got through EBay was quite complete but essentially the following would be needed;
Intake manifold -upper & lower (accelerator cable bracket on plenum),
Fuel rail - preferably with injectors (we can get aftermarket injectors here but pricey),
Fuel pressure regulator,
Throttle body (with or without TPS. Our ECU's here can do without),
Air intake pipe (between aircleaner & throttle body).
Original thermostat top housing.
Thats pretty much it.
There are a heap of guys on this forum alone who are looking to do this mod but the intakes are non existant here. The 22R never came out here with fuel injection and it was produced here up to 1998!
Prices if you can please

still has the 22re/w56/dual t-cases with 4.7's
lockers front and rear with 5.29 gears on 42" tires
we just finished converting the steering to full hydo
using an orbital valve off a john deere loader.

Yeah, I don't understand why this was'nt a more widely marketed body. I find the D/C to be very versatile, family in the front, kit in the back, everyone's happy and off you go on your travels / trails.

Some kid wakes up early on Xmas morning, looks out his window and sees you in that Lux on your way to the shops to get something important you may have forgotten, before your own kids wake up. That kid will really think he saw Santa passing by.
When your road comes to an end ...... you need a HILUX!.
Life is like a jar of Jalapeño peppers ... what you do today, might burn your ass tomorrow.
Don't take life too seriously ..... no-one gets out alive.
It's not about waiting for storms to pass. It's about learning to dance in the rain.
And be yourself ..... everyone else is taken!

Re: rock crawling toyotas
The 22R is something like the 4Y .... completely adequate in standard form although very thirsty.
Yep, it's awesome what can be achieved with both those motors, but usually the power band is drastically altered with the 'doctored, motors, delivering some unbelievable HP higher up in the rev range but at the expense of low rev torque. So for general off-road use I would say it's best to leave it standard, just add fuel injection if it doesn't have. For crawling one would have dual / triple X-fer boxes or a crawler box fitted which brings the gearing so low that low rev torque is no longer an issue.
