Calling all Ford v6 guys

Post by pampoen »

Well thors motor is using alot of oil and soon will be replaced by a more powerful heart,a ford v6 engine.I need to know a few things first though, whats the best year to look for, should i go 3.4,3.2,3.0,? wht would give me the best torque, power, reliability. Are there any mods i can do to it to give it that edge, how much can i take off the old 2,2 motor and put on the new one.And the drive train will my gearbox be able to take the strain and will the ratios be affected in any way.And finally the most important question of all!!!should the heads be painted orange or tangerine?

I care Luke Darling, though I don't have a Ford V6....

got offered a rebuilt "Big Six" (from the old classic Big Six Cortina)....

Real cheap conversion..........

Real reliable...............

Real Fuel Eficient..........

But not quite dependable enough for my Daily Runner :?:

Can I talk to you about EFi

Try King Rat - he bought a converted SFA this year

not a v6 owner anymore but i suggest to use the sraight 3.0l v6. i bought my cortina bakkie with about 280 000km on the clock and i drove 7 types of sh!t out of it and it did not budge or break once. the only thing i had was a leaking carb plunger but that was cause i was o bloody lazy to replace it. i would further more say as you have a carb version lux stick to the 3.0l. there are less roubles and the rest like the 3.2 and 3.4 are feul injected and offer more n.m and kw but there are so much more that can go wrong. think about it! less electronics, less worries. oh and the tappit covers, by the colour of your lux i would say go tang....

happy motoring

I also do care... I had a V6 Ford in a Hilux.. they go well, they are the cheapest horsepower on the market, and if looked after they are very reliable. Also parts are cheap and freely available, and they can be EFI'ed and modified for not a lot of bucks.. Dont go 3.4 or 3.2 or even 2.5 go 3.0

Howzit, very busy implementing an new system at my job, sorry for the slow response. :D:
I concur with the rest of the guys, very reliable power, will last forever if looked after. I enjoy the torque and it's very usable offroad for a newby like me. It will not put any undue strain on your drivetrain as I know guys here that have much bigger power from their engines and they do not have any issues. Keep it simple and stay with the 3.0l with a carb. Anyone in the platteland can fix the enjine quick-quick. My tappet cover is blue, like the bulle!! Sorry, it's actualy black like the Sharks!

I was not a fan of the 3.0l V6, but since I now own one I love and respect it. Doesnt use oil or smoke or overheat. Just enough power to turn my 33's and easy to service. I have the 3.0l with the 38 Weber and branches and its such a pleasure to drive long distances because I can stay at a steady 110kms/hour. I also love the low down torque it has. Probly one of the most poplar and reliable conversions for the lux. I bought mine from a oldish guy in his 60's that really looked after it so I know it wasnt raced around. Feul consumption is not bad considering I only live 8 kms from work so I use it everyday since I sold my platkar. Sounds good aswell with the branches and s/steel freeflow.

Not difficult at all, my mechanic found me one in 2 mins then I came across half a dozen at breakers.

Had I not gone 4Y Efi I would have deffinately gone with a 3.0ltr Ford V6 with a Dicktator Efi; they sound lekker nê and lots of guys have come up with cheap and affective solutions to get on top of their Achilles Heels (Engine Mounts breaking and Heat Issues).

Best o' Luck mate :P

As with the other guys, go with the standard 3.0.

I salvaged a burnt out JT3000 motor from another Hilux, stripped it and rebuilt it completely with new parts.
Done 3000km so far and no problems or oil/water leaks. The whole conversion I did myself and it cost me about R 15k two years ago.

Here is the shopping list from my conversion:

Any other specific info your require, let me know. I gathered quite a bit doing the conversion.

Is it breaking or still melting?

If it is breaking Alan told me he use a peacer of old safety belt which he raps around the mounting to ensure it does not tear again.

Well try the safety belt thing as Alan suggested, I am going to do the same on mine as well. If you can get a damaged piece of safety belt from a scrapyard it should not cost you an arm and a leg.

Darryl, I am using 4Y engine mounts from Midas. ~R40 bucks. Had no issues so far.

MIDAS 4YEngine mountings: RB073 R 34.24ea

Pampoen, I traced my motor via the engine number at the Ford factory. Seems it was built for a Sierra when sourced by JT Developments. Power and torque are much better than the 4Y, fuel consumption a bit worse (5km/L).

I had to have the came re-ground as it had worn spots, so not sure how much valve lift I lost. I have never set it up proffesionally on a Dyno or anything, just set the carb up as per the Weber website, and the timing to workshop manual spec. Offroad low rev torque is awsome. I actually find 2nd low too "fast" when climbing steep hills and get smoother climbing in 1st low, against common practice.

The bakkie I took the motor from did ~ 200 000 km's on the standard gearbox, no hassles. Bellhousing was from Gilo Engineering. I rev at just over 3000 RPM at 100km/h.

Hilex08, I built this motor not to leak oil, and it doesn't  (and yes, it does have oil in)

As for tappets, YES they are noisy even when set correcty, although they say set them when hot, by the time you've stripped to covers off, the engine has normally cooled down...

If you are going to install a Ford V6, then you need to re shape the firewall to clear the cylinderhead on the passenger side. I only found that out when I had spend 2 hours dropping the motor in. So, out she came again.

Not a big job. Sit on the front axle and wield your 5 pound hammer :o:

No, just the mount. I fitted mine without the 4Y metal cover.

Looking back, maybe I should have transferred it as a heat shield. I can't remember if
it would have fitted with the fabricated engine mounts for the V6.

Here's the 4Y mount used for the V6

:D: only joking !!!! mine was dry all the years !!!!

only started using oil after a couple of years, but that was extreme rough handling.
overhauled the motor again and it was fine for a couple of more years.

Using the original fibre gear/steel gear setup. I think Alert Engine parts sell the Aluminium gear in place of the fibre gear.

I am still running points and condensor in the Bosch dizzy.

Go for the 3.oL. I had a JT3000 conversion with the German Cologne version in my old Lux from a Ford 20M. If you can get one of these, you're in the pound seats. Had a lot more torque than the Essex version. This I know as a mate of mine had an Essex with Wildcat branches en all and going up Fishers hill in 5th gear, he couldn't catch me in 4th. His was a DJ conversion. Never any "will leave you stuck" trouble, except I replaced the clutch after many years. The petrol tended to perculate in the Weber. That got sorted by going to a 4-core Rad and I fitted a fuel pump from a Dyna. Oh yes, she started to give a puff of smoke when cold starting, which was sorted with 3.0L Skyline valve-stem seals. I am also playing with the idea of doing this conversion to my 2.4D. You don't need a tool box if you have a Ford V6, you only need "bloudraad" and a pair of pliers.

Ek hou nogal van my V8...

well have just had a quick read, so hope I did not miss any points, and hope me not repeating any thing!!

yes the 3.0L are great, however there is an hidden gem, that very few people know about, another one of those where the manufacturer got it all wrong for various reasons!!!

so let me give my 10c worth here!!

self have the Ford 3.4 V6 and have considered going back to the 3.0L till I learned few things!!

why is the 3.4L not stronger:
well when Ford was busy developing the motor they had a choice of cams from a cam manufacturer, Ford SA took the cam that produced the less amount of power and torque, one of the reasons being that the gearbox suppliers were not happy to take the risk of the extra power!!
where the those boxes are actually very strong!! as strong as a toyota box, yes!!
and have played with toyota gearboxes before!!! done a few conversions!!

yes also true that some of the 3.4l had a heat issue, yes also true, my 3.4 does run hotter then what the 3.0 did, it is a bigger motor and it does produce more power, it has to produce more heat!!
and my 3.4 does have a heat issue, although only when towing 1.6 tons coming back from he coast, in traffic on the hottest summer day, bumper to bumper crawling on the highway, stayed perfectly cool!! yes my 3.4 does still have a issue somewhere!!
that is part of the reason why I am here, to get plenty info to make a proper decision about the Lexus V8

now back on the 3.4, with a nice cam, nothing radical, with a nice set of heads, and it will shine just like any other V6 of similar size!! hence the rev limit of 5400rpm on those motors

how do I know all this
have met and am in regular contact with one of the guys involved in the developing of the 3.4 V6!!
and a good friend's brother works in the same department and has confirmed the info!!

busy convincing myself out of the Lexus V8 conversion!!!! eish!!!

any case the 3.4 had Hydraulic lifters, those did not last for ever, however my one has taken a beeting!!

as for the engine mountings, have you guys ever tried the Sierra mountings they have a fluid inside, and can take a hammering, ask me!!

sadly these motors were not EFI, and the EFI manifolds are as scarce as chicken teeth!!
however the original carburetor manifolds can be converted into EFI manifolds, there is engineering work to it!!
not just bolt on!!

well think I have said enough for now!!!

There are only a few things in this world that sounds nicer than a well tuned Ford V6 with twin pipes hitting the high notes and keeping it.....

does anyone still have this clip? :beg:

wow

rereading this thread brings back memories

the heat issue that I had on my 3.4 V6 turns out was the sealing ring had a crack, not blown through.
hence why it would only overheat sometimes

part of the problem is that I bough the engine second hand and it had been rebuilt before I got it, and they did not use Payen gaskets
one on these V6 s it Payen only. it did over 42000 km with the intermittent heat issue
that is now fixed although it now has other issues

this thread is bad news, makes me wonder if I should just redo the V6 or finish the lexus conversion

wish
