Forum Slow - Telkom Network Failure - SAT3
Hi All...
Just an FYI... Telkom did some SAT3 cable repairs/upgrades in the early hours of this morning... something went wrong at around 8am... the SAT3 cable is Telkom international internet access cable... therefore the forum speed is adversely affected... notice from Hetzner:
Network Degradation (International SAT3)
* Status: Attending
* Type: Network Degradation
* Start Date: 2010-02-02 08:10:00
* Resolved Date: TBA
* Point of impact: International SAT3
* Symptoms experienced: Most South African internet users will experience difficulty connecting to international hosting services.
* Cause of problem: Degraded cable
* Estimated time of repair: 17:00:00
* Additional information: Following the maintenance on the SAT3 cable this morning, Telkom SA have reported degradation of this service. Update: In an effort to bypass issues on the Telkom SAT3 link, MTN Business is rerouting all international traffic via SEACOM - intermittent connectivity may result from the increased activity on this line.
* Attending: Telkom SA Engineers
Those of you using a service provider that utilises the new under sea cable will hopefully be experiencing no interuptions!

Ok seems like Telkom have resolved the gremlins... connection is stable, but latency is still pretty high:

Thanks Bretton. I did not feel a difference this morning as we are using Neotel at the office as those guys at Telkom don't know what they are doing

Why do the words Telkom, Network and Failure sit so nicely together :problem:

Re: Forum Slow - Telkom Network Failure - SAT3
Hannes many ISP's may disregard IMP traffic when under load or put it in the lowest class with high probability of packet drops. If a link is congested and everyone starts loading ICMP onto the link it only aggravate the problem.Hannes.S wrote:Ours is up and down all the time

But yes, I agree

ICMP iaw pings is small packets of date that can be detected by an ISP because of the port it uses. If you do not buy a Tier-1 type ISP connection but rather a Tier-2 like most shaped broadband connections your ISP will give priority to certain types of traffic like SMTP, HTTP, FTP and less priority to traffic like ICMP thus those packets will be dropped first if the buffer at the ISP gets full.

In general there is a small little problem why we in SA experience larger latencies then the oukies in Europe and that is a simply because we are generally a small stone throw away from them.
For example the SAT 3 system is 14 350km km long, and since no one is capable of building single fibres that long or transmission systems that will propagate via a fibre that long there is quite a few repeaters in between us and Europe. Every piece of transmission equipment adds a small amount of latency to the link, so if you can convince everyone in the world to duplicate the internet backbone in the southern tip of Africa then your latency will be a thing of the past, else you must move there if you are not happy with the latency.
Riaan please dont you are only adding to the problem

From the ox to the jacket.
i have changed my ISP. I now use a unlimited account from DigiChilli.The cost is R500, but you get 2x logins.
Me and a buddy is sharing it.So i pay R250 for an unlimited ADSL account
They had some problems in the beginning,but things look stable now
