Hilux squeaks and knocking sounds

Post by werner1 »

Hi there
I am new to the forum and recently got a 1999 2.7i 4x4 d/c Hilux. It's an awesome truck. Recently I started to get squeaks in the front and the rear when driving over high humps. I also got a knocking sound when going over these huge boulders the traffic department puts in the road here. Not that I worry but the sounds is getting me to worry.
Could anyone advise me as to what it could be?

Welcome to the forum Werner. Knocking and squeaking sounds can originate from quite a few places.
Squeaking: Check the rubber bushes on your suspension. Might need to be cleaned or replace. It could be the leave springs in the back that need some cleaning in between the blades. But my money would be on the front suspension bushes.
Knocking: Loose suspension U-bolts, Loose bolts on the wishbone, loose shock absorber, missing rubber straps on the exhaust causing it to move excessively, loose bolts on towbar / bullbar, loose engine mountings etc etc

If you describe the sounds a bit better and from where more or less they originate one can narrow it down a bit

I would check and replace bushes as Cassie suggested, then take it one step at a time

Thanks OOMS and CasKru.
I will have a look at it.
The knocking sound is coming from the rear of the car.
I don't hope it is anything that is loose. I am going to Sodwana in a week.

Hallo Werner,

Ja, die squeaks kan jou nogals gek maak?

Ek het die agterste vere se bushes uitgehaal, skoon gemaak en gries gesmeer. Daarna die vere met Castrol(?) Flick(?) gespuit en my sanity is so halfpad terug!

Werner

My guess would be that if it only happens when you go over speed bumps etc and not so much in normal driving is that your exhaust is the culprit hitting against the body. Maybe check all the rubbers. Is it a straight pipe (more or less) or is there a bend right at the end so that it turns towards the side coming out behind the left rear wheel? If so I've seen some bends bent a little to high (must point a bit downwards and not horizontally to the side) which then causes it to catch against the body even if the rubbers is all fine.

But for the trip I would first start with the suspension and check that all bolts and nuts is secured.

The pipe is a cowley pipe that is fitted. The tail end doen't bend to go out to the side, it goes straight out next to the spare wheel. There is a small bend next to the long range tank that was hitting the tank. I took it bak and the made the bend a little bigger.
I might agree with you that there maybe some loose bolts.
I don't know how that could happen that they came loose.
I will have it looked at.

Hi there guys. Thanks for all your help. I have sorted out my problems.
The squeaking at the back is the shackle bushes that is sterting to wear out. The knocking at the front was the anti-rol pins that was completely worn out. The exhaust is also suspect.

Thank you for your help.
