Did this one 2 weekends ago. And it is traumatic to say the least. You have to drill your Hilux full of holes.

Got my hands on a snorkel kit and instead of paying R750 for fitment went the route of fitting it myself. Did some reading on Aussie forums and got to know that with this kit you need to move the template as far forward as possible with your indicator light as the reference point. The template is a bit on the short side and you need to make provision for that.

Those little allen screws that go into the snorkel I used loctite to keep in place as they are then bolted through the fender to keep it in place with lock nuts.

I used an 89mm hole saw to cut the hole where the snorkel has to go into the fender. After that I used a power file to smooth the edges.

I blackened the ends of the bolts that go through the fender to keep the snorkel in place and then pushed it against the body. The template is not perfect so it showed the correct places to drill and only one lined up with what the template showed.

After all the holes where drilled I painted it with white Duco. Then I applied a generous amount of automotive silicone to the holes and around the bolts and rivets. Then I could bolt and rivet everything down.

The bolts supplied to attach the top of the snorkel with top bracket on the A-Pillar had heads there where to thick and they caught on the door frame on opening and closing, so I had to change them for round head 6mm allen head bolts. Now the clearance is fine.

I must say I am rather satisfied with my own installation.

After fitting snorkel I've extracted another 3kw from the engine as it breathes MUCH easier.

Ek dink jy kyk bietjie verkeerd Spartan. Rim is beslis nie gebuig nie.

Job well done, Heinrich! I feel your pain in regard to making a gaping big hole... at least we only cut 19mm ones and have nice little UV resistant rubber plugs to close them up with if we remove the antennas afterwards when the vehicle is sold ;)

F_D, not so much fun to put the drill to the fender. Hurts plenty.... :blackeye:

Simon, ek dink daai storie is dalk as jy jou vinger in 'n snorkel druk terwyl iemand swem.....

Thanks for a good topic Heinrich. Still, I can't get it over my heart to take a drill to my Hilux! Does anybody know of someone who can fit a snorkel in the Durban area? I'm prepared to pay, just don't want to take a drill to my baby - who knows how it will affect my karma in my next life...
