Rusty Now BIG RED
Well after a slight incident due to poor/lack of judgement the weekend, Rusty sustained some side damage forcing me to start stripping a little sooner then expected.
Upon stripping out the interior, I was surprised that all is not that bad, how ever on the pillar between the 2 doors WOW but repairable.
I have decided that it's best to now sort what I have rather then buy an unknown and sit with the same or worse.
Here's a few piccies of the damage and rust, and I'll keep updating as things happen - don't happen :?

That gives me the SH onet's, when guys take the short cut to fix problems like that. Rather cut and weld in a new piece.

Re: Rusty Uncovered
Been awhile with all the childrens school Christmas concerts ect.. but started to play again on Sunday after some shopping.
All is now stripped out from inside except the dash, this'll hopefully be out the weekend.
Upon removing the roof linning, I now see all the patch works which were done in the past, a few arial holes which have been filled and the passenger side rail has been replaced before.
Under the fenders was not to bad, just some rust on the drivers side at the bottom of the windscreen and by the run off area.
What I'd give to find a original unused cab from the factory lying in some 1's workshop/storage.
I also removed the canopy and load bin to inspect the rust behind it, 1 small patch on the cab otherwise fine.
The chassis looks beaut, dirty but beautifull, no cracks rust nuffing
I'm planning on removing the long range tank aswell and gonna fit a 2nd standard tank next to the original 1 while its stripped. Also gonna clean up all the wiring and do all the additional wiring while its open.

Hi Zane,
so you decided to take the plunge... it looks like fate forced your hand a little.
Your floor pan still looks new compared to Rokorok
just a small little tiny hole in the B pillar - should be on the road again by Friday :)
what are your plans for the Long range tank? I am looking for one
good luck with the project
Rick

Pitty about Bavians...
I know hao you feel, I missed the GTG last week.
my consolation is that when my Lux is back I will KNOW she is right and can venture out in confidence.
ETA for completion: I have given myself till the end of January. The Minister of Home Affairs is also the Reserve Bank Govenor and she didn't approve my Hilux bail-out package
I will give you a shout about the tank - thanks
...and keep us updated, lots of pics...

Rick, I second your feelings, it doesn't seem like too much work in the beginning, but you get to a point where you realise WTH and it's too late to turn back.
Marriage is the beginning of the perfect divorce, so if it's gonna happen, let it be for a good reason, and I love my van
Got my 190Amp Mig welder yesterday and all the wire ect... so shortly the grinding banging ect.. can get under way, would love to have sand blasted, but in this little fishermans village, every 1 is booked full till the new year so grinding and wire brushing it'll be.
Wish us luck

Re: Rusty Uncovered
Firstly, Happy New Year to All and may it be only GOOD that lies ahead.
Didn't work on the van these holidays, except for 2 days now at the end.
I managed to do the cutting (no finishing work) for the left hand side filler (2nd Tank) and remove the cab from the chassis.
Things are looking quite F........ing K..ak to be honest as I have found that wherre the previous owners have done repair works, they never removed the rusted pieces and just plated over with out even treating/primering it. This has caused even bigger hassels as now it'll have to all be redone and on a larger scale :x
TBH I don't really know if it's worth it anymore, trying to fix it, and am still toying with selling her off in pieces, will have to decide but having a cool off period first for a few weeks. Read alot of Beers ect.... for a few weeks looking at it in the garage.
Well here's the pics

Re: Rusty Uncovered BODY PARTS NOW FOR SALE !!!!!!
Cheers Rick
Stef, none of this would've happend today if it wasn't for Tiny gotta say lucky to have a neighbour like him.
The van, well lets start
Toyota venture seats, recovered
Door panels redone
Roof linning new, not sure if it's what I want yett but will see.
New carpets, same as above
Body, resprayed just not polished, a few touch ups due to handling, nothing serious
GREY Dash
Aircon
Looking at the body, drip rails ect... standard - not repaired. Floor had some rust, this has been removed except for 1 place, this will be sorted before going onto chassis.
Started life as a 4Y, at some stage though had a 2L diesel fitted so have to remove the traps and filters and then adjust wiring to suite 4Y again.
In general, I don't believe I could get much more for what I paid, at least I now know that I have a flipping decent cabby to round around and 4x4 with.
Now to get her going before the long weekend in April Baviaans is calling

Re: Rusty Soon to Be BIG RED
Ok here's a few pictures of the now soon to be BIG RED
! garunteed way of Peeeiiiiing off the wife is to buy a beautifull 90% complete body for your hilux on the friday and then Saturday morning you rip it apart
We decided that while she is off the chassis still, we'll fix up some poor jobs done on the floors and rust proof and paint the underside and inside black, with that we also decided it best to remove the dash and see what lays behind for us, at the same time, I decided to give the dash components a wash another way of upsetting the wife.
I know have to say a HUGE thanks to my neighbour, he is working on the van during the day while I'm at work and so far he is doing an amazing job. When I get home now in the evenings, I'll be going next door to where the cab is in his garage and giving a hand.
Hold thumbs as we hope too have the cab bolted to the chassis on Saturday coming and then I can start the wiring and re-assembly if it.

I did , Monday it was really hot and my 5 yr old wanted to help Dad, so easiest way was for us to put on our costumes and enjoy the sun, pool and cleaning in 1
Luckily Wiffie wasn't too mad as Sunday was my 1yr olds party and with the jumping castle and hordes of children in and out the pool it doesn't look so great, needs a good shock and treatment due to the large mineral deposits made by them.

Re: Rusty soon to be Big Red
Ok so I've been busy, but my neighbours been even busy'er on my van.
While I worked on my side stripping the final bits off the old cab, he was prepping and painting the floor and underside of the cab on his side.
TONIGHT the body goes onto the chassis so I can start assembly
I took the entire wiring harness out of the old shell, and got rid of all the unwanted additions, now I'll re use this in the new shell so I know it matches my setup.
I have also decided, that when fitting the wiring, I'm gonna fit a new 12way spade fuse box and run all additional wiring as a seperate harness to the main including radio ect.. I want 2 12v points in the back behind the seat, 1 in the centre in the back an additional 1 in front by the fun sticks and 1 by the rear view mirror/cabin light, all will have there own fused supply. By adding them now, there'll be no need to lift carpeting and roof liners later even if not needed now they'll be there.
Once bolted down, I'll align and fit the doors before removing all the windows for tinting, and fitting electric motors to the front 1's. Also need to fit my central locking, but this time I'm only gonna fit it to the 2 front doors not the rears. Also I wanna run all the speaker cables while everthing is open and out.
Some thing though I do need advice on, should I bother to refit my Safari Snorkel? Other then looks I have a 4Y and rarely go near water deep enough to think of needing 1 - anyhow electrics will have failed before then, what you guys think?
PS, the inside is finished, I just got to excited and forgot to take pics of it completed , will do so tonight

I'd say fit the snorkel since you already have it and while you're busy with everything anyway. Even if its not going to assist with water crossings it will assist with cleaner air and cold air induction.

Seeing that you're never going near any water you shouldn't fit it, to much trouble and it has my name on it!! It looks better on white paint as well

Stef I'm sure it's got your name on it for the right price
The spray job was done by others before I baught it, Tiny cleaned up the inside and floor and redid them in black along with the rust proofing.
Tiny's Dad is gonna do the polishing for me, thats the reason to get the door ect... on and stripped so polishing can be done without rubbers ect... in the way.

Re: Rusty soon to be Big Red
Thanks for the good words guys.
Ok so I've now removed the old wiring harness, and fitted my original 1 which I first cleaned up and removed all the add on bits.
I also baught the new heater cable from the STEALERS R200 so I can fit the dash back.
All the wiring to the rear is in place and now only for the Extra,s wiring to be done but hope to have this finished by the end of the weekend.
We put the load bin on last night, haven't bolted it down yet but now she's starting to look like something.

Re: Rusty soon to be Big Red
Hi Guys
Thanks for all the good comments, appreciated
I can say that a project like this, never goes as planned, and never costs what you plan either.
I've managed to get the dash installed and can gladly say that Toyota never fitted as good I also redid the foam of the vents and boxes ect.. so this should improve things abit on that side.
Last night I managed to fit the rads for the AC and engine along with put the seats in as a mock up as I haven't had them in yet since getting them. Gotta say they fit awesome and are nice and comfy, just need to be warn in abit with some use as they still hard as newly redone.
Only big thing really that's happend so far now is, she's in my garage first time inn 5 months since I've had a vehicle in it. Took alot of cleaning and repacking, work like this in a single garage is no fun, never enough space.
Will plans again for this weekend, are to get the engine running and again try and get all the doors and bonnet on so I can have her polished and then fit linnings and carpets ect..
I'm gonna use SPX, Cross-linked, closed cell, expanded Polythene Foam matting for under the carpets. This stuff is heat and fire retardent so should work well as it won't collect water should some get on it.
Lets just hope things work out as planned this weekend not like last

Re: Rusty soon to be Big Red
I'm really hoping hopoing she's gonna look as good as I want
Still gotta sandblast and powder coat the sliders, homemade rear bumper and alot of finishings. Spray the door pillars black and tint windows, new head lights and respray grill, possibley fit 2.7 booster and master and have to redo the rear brakes, central locking, sound, additional power points, fit snorkel, redo front prop, redo mags and get another matching set - thinking of making a off road/camping trailer with the old loadbin and offroad canopy as it doesn't fit the local model colour match this to the van and should look sweet/unique I think. This will also mean I don't have to lug the additional weight and items around permantely as she gets used alot in town.
Does the list ever end ? Thaught there was alot less left to do until I started typing good way to demotivate yourself, sit and write/type all the things down.
Mark, As for the Hogsback, would love to but unfortunately the old 2.2 is tired, doubt she'll make it to the filling station at the mo, this has to be redone once the body is complete.
I plan on getting her useable for around town while saving to either rebuild or replace it with something. Possibley go Oil Burner even :?

Re: Rusty Now Big Red
She's on the road after a LOONG 6 months, and I'm happy with the near end result, will lets say I made to Baviaans and back trouble free so that's a winner on it's own
I still have to sandblast and powder coat the side steps and rear bumper, hopefully be done next week.
Find some way to get a better looking front bumper/bullbar
Replpace the headlights and grill alonf with the indicators on the side.
Replace the bottom front indicators with driving lights
Complete the interior floor carpeting and sound deadning
Black out the door frames and bottom lip of valances on either side
replace/recover steering wheel in grey and spray interior covers black
Then in a short while (month or 3) fit an oil burner to the front and service front prop and diff
She's running though and that makes me HAPPY, now I'm motivated at least, just too make 100% reliable now.
